Welche Rolle nahmen Ärzte in der Versorgung terminal Kranker und Sterbender ein? Kam der medizinischen Symptomkontrolle eine besondere Bedeutung zu und wurden verfügbare starke Analgetika bei Sterbenden auch kompetent eingesetzt? 

Diese und weitere Facetten der Versorgung terminal Kranker und Sterbender am Übergang in die moderne, durch die Hospizbewegung geprägte Zeit analysiert Anna Minnrich. Grundlage ihrer Analyse ist eine einzigartige Quelle: ein originaler Reisebericht mit Beschreibung von 18 Einrichtungen für Sterbende 1973 in Großbritannien von Sylvia Anne Lack, Pionierin der amerikanischen Hospizbewegung und ärztlicher Leiterin des ersten amerikanischen Sterbehospizes. Der Reisebericht wird in diesem Werk, ebenso wie von Anna Minnrich geführte Interviews mit Sylvia Lack, erstmals veröffentlicht. Auch der aktuelle Wissensstand über die Person Sylvia Lacks, ihren beruflichen Werdegang und persönliche Beweggründe, ihre Sicht auf den palliativmedizinischen Umgang mit Patienten der 1970er Jahre sowie ihre eigene spätere Tätigkeit am Connecticut Hospice in Amerika wird hiermit in einzigartiger, persönlicher Weise ergänzt.
N2  - Hospices –widely known nowadays as a safe haven for the terminal ill and the dying.
But how were the dying cared for before the modern hospice movement gained influence? Due to the rare existence of historical sources on the subject, we know extraordinarily little about the medical day-today-life in Homes for the terminal ill and the dying. Did doctors play a decisive role in the care of dying patients? How important was symptom control and to which amount did doctors apply the existent powerful analgesics confidently?  

Anna Minnrich has explored these and other aspects on the care of the terminal ill and the dying at the transition point to a time influenced by the modern hospice movement.
The analysis is based on a unique historical source: an original travel report by Sylvia Anne Lack - pioneer of the American hospice movement and medical director of the first American hospice- who describes 18 Homes for the Dying in 1973 in Great Britain. The report is being published within the framework of the thesis for the first time – along with the interviews with Sylvia Lack, conducted by Anna Minnrich in 2014. 
The thesis hereby also contributes essentially to the level of knowledge about Sylvia Lack, her medical career and her personal point of view on the care of dying patients in the 1970’s and the work as a medical director to the Connecticut Hospice in America.
