Describing the interface between long- and shortwave radiation fluxes, as well as between turbulent heat fluxes and the ground heat flux, LST plays a crucial role in the global heat balance. Satellite-derived LST is an indispensable tool for monitoring these changes consistently over large areas and for long time periods. Data from the AVHRR (Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer) sensors have been available since the early 1980s. In the TIMELINE project, LST is derived for the entire operating period of AVHRR sensors over Europe at a 1 km spatial resolution. In this study, we present the validation results for the TIMELINE AVHRR daytime LST. The validation approach consists of an assessment of the temporal consistency of the AVHRR LST time series, an inter-comparison between AVHRR LST and in situ LST, and a comparison of the AVHRR LST product with concurrent MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) LST. The results indicate the successful derivation of stable LST time series from multi-decadal AVHRR data. The validation results were investigated regarding different LST, TCWV and VA, as well as land cover classes. The comparisons between the TIMELINE LST product and the reference datasets show seasonal and land cover-related patterns. The LST level was found to be the most determinative factor of the error. Objective: We investigated the association between asthma, and chronic rhino-sinusitis (CRS) with intake of fruits and vegetables in European adults. Methods: A stratified random sample was drawn from the Global Allergy and Asthma Network of Excellence (GA\(^2\)LEN) screening survey, in which 55,000 adults aged 15-75 answered a questionnaire on respiratory symptoms. Asthma score (derived from self-reported asthma symptoms) and CRS were the outcomes of interest. Dietary intake of 22 subgroups of fruits and vegetables was ascertained using the internationally validated GA\(^2\)LEN Food Frequency Questionnaire. Adjusted associations were examined with negative binomial and multiple regressions. Simes procedure was used to control for multiple testing. Results: A total of 3206 individuals had valid data on asthma and dietary exposures of interest. 22.8\% reported having at least 1 asthma symptom (asthma score ≥1), whilst 19.5\% had CRS. After adjustment for potential confounders, asthma score was negatively associated with intake of dried fruits (β-coefficient -2.34; 95\% confidence interval [CI] -4.09, -0.59), whilst CRS was statistically negatively associated with total intake of fruits (OR 0.73; 95\% CI 0.55, 0.97). Conversely, a positive association was observed between asthma score and alliums vegetables (adjusted β-coefficient 0.23; 95\% CI 0.06, 0.40). None of these associations remained statistically significant after controlling for multiple testing. Snow, the most widely distributed cold region component, is highly sensitive to climate change. Large parts of the cold regions in Europe are mountain areas, which are densely populated because of the various ecosystem services and socioeconomic well-being in mountains. At present, severe consequences caused by climate change have been observed in European mountains and their surrounding areas. Yet, large knowledge gaps hinder the development of effective regional and local adaptation strategies. Long-term and evidence-based regional studies are urgently needed to enhance the comprehension of regional responses to climate change. Earth Observation (EO) provides long-term consistent records of the Earth's surface. It is a great alternative and/or supplement to conventional in-situ measurements which are usually time-consuming, cost-intensive and logistically demanding, particularly for the poor accessibility of cold regions. With the assistance of EO, land surface dynamics in cold regions can be observed in an objective, repeated, synoptic and consistent way. Thanks to free and open data policies, long-term archives such as Landsat Archive and Sentinel Archive can be accessed free-of-charge. The high- to medium-resolution remote sensing imagery from these freely accessible archives gives EO-based time series datasets the capability to depict snow dynamics in European mountains from the 1980s to the present. In order to compile such a dataset, it is necessary to investigate the spatiotemporal availability of EO data, and develop a spatiotemporally transferable framework from which one can investigate snow dynamics. Among the available EO image archives, the Landsat Archive has the longest uninterrupted records of the Earth's land surface. Furthermore, its 30 m spatial resolution fulfils the requirements for snow monitoring in complex terrains. Landsat data can yield a time series of snow dynamics in mountainous areas from 1984 to the present. However, severe Landsat data gaps have occurred across certain regions of Europe. Moreover, the Landsat Level 1 Precision and Terrain (L1TP) data is scarcer (up to 50\% less) in high-latitude mountainous areas than in low-latitude mountainous areas. Given the abovementioned facts, the Regional Snowline Elevation (RSE) is selected to characterize the snow dynamics in mountainous areas, as it can handle cloud obstructions in the optical images. In this thesis, I present a five-step framework to derive and densify RSE time series in European mountains, i.e. (1) pre-processing, (2) snow detection, (3) RSE retrieval, (4) time series densification, and (5) Regional Snowline Retreat Curve (RSRC) production. The results of the intra-annual RSE variations show a uniquely high variation in the beginning of the ablation seasons in the Alpine catchment Tagliamento, mainly toward higher elevation. As for inter-annual variations of RSE, median RSE increases in all selected catchments, with an average speed of around 4.66 m ∙ a-1 (median) and 5.87 m ∙ a-1 (at the beginning of the ablation season). The fastest significant retreat is observed in the catchment Drac (10.66 m ∙ a-1, at the beginning of the ablation season), and the slowest significant retreat is observed in the catchment Uzh (1.74 m ∙ a-1, at the beginning of the ablation season). The increase of RSEs at the beginning of the ablation season is faster than the median RSEs, whose average difference is nearly 1.21 m ∙ a-1, particularly in the catchment Drac (3.72 m ∙ a-1). The results of the RSRCs show a significant rise in RSEs at the beginning of the ablation season, except for the Alpine catchment Alpenrhein and Var, and the Pyrenean catchment Ariege. It indicates that 11.8 and 3.97 degrees Celsius less per year are needed for the regional snowlines to reach the middle point of the RSRC in the Tagliamento and Tysa, respectively. The variation of air temperature is regarded as an example of a potential climate driver in this thesis. The retrieved monthly mean RSEs are highly correlated (mean correlation coefficient "R" ̅ = 0.7) with the monthly temperature anomalies, which are more significant in months with extremely low/high temperature. Another case study that investigates the correlation between river discharges and RSEs is carried out to demonstrate the potential consequences of the derived snowline dynamics. The correlation analysis shows a good correlation between river discharges and RSEs (correlation coefficient, R=0.52). In this thesis, the developed framework signifies a better understanding of the snow dynamics in mountain areas, as well as their potential triggers and consequences. Nonetheless, an urgent need persists for: (1) validation data to assess long-term snow-related observations based on high-resolution EO data; (2) further studies to reveal interactions between snow and its ambient environment; and (3) regional and local adaptation-strategies coping with climate change. However, the evidence for effective preventive strategies is scarce. The protocol of a European research project to develop an optimized evidence based program for suicide prevention is presented. Method The groundwork for this research has been established by a regional community based intervention for suicide prevention that focuses on improving awareness and care for depression performed within the European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD). The EAAD intervention consists of (1) training sessions and practice support for primary care physicians,(2) public relations activities and mass media campaigns, (3) training sessions for community facilitators who serve as gatekeepers for depressed and suicidal persons in the community and treatment and (4) outreach and support for high risk and self-help groups (e.g. helplines). The intervention has been shown to be effective in reducing suicidal behaviour in an earlier study, the Nuremberg Alliance Against Depression. In the context of the current research project described in this paper (OSPI-Europe) the EAAD model is enhanced by other evidence based interventions and implemented simultaneously and in standardised way in four regions in Ireland, Portugal, Hungary and Germany. The enhanced intervention will be evaluated using a prospective controlled design with the primary outcomes being composite suicidal acts (fatal and non-fatal), and with intermediate outcomes being the effect of training programs, changes in public attitudes, guideline-consistent media reporting. In addition an analysis of the economic costs and consequences will be undertaken, while a process evaluation will monitor implementation of the interventions within the different regions with varying organisational and healthcare contexts. Discussion This multi-centre research seeks to overcome major challenges of field research in suicide prevention. It pools data from four European regions, considerably increasing the study sample, which will be close to one million. In addition, the study will gather important information concerning the potential to transfer this multilevel program to other health care systems. This disease has low prevalence and remains underreported in Europe. Emerging clinical data show that diagnostic difficulties are still common. We report on a 76-year old patient suffering from AE lesions restricted to the left lobe of the liver who underwent a curative extended left hemihepatectomy. Prior to the resection a liver biopsy under the suspicion of an atypical malignancy was performed. After the intervention he developed a pseudoaneurysm of the hepatic artery that was successfully coiled. Surprisingly, during surgery, the macroscopic appearance of the tumour revealed a growth pattern that was rather typical for cystic echinococcosis (CE), i.e., a gross tumour composed of multiple large vesicles with several centimeters in diameter. In addition, there were neither extensive adhesions nor infiltrations of the neighboring pancreas and diaphragm as was expected from previous imaging results. The unexpected diagnosis of AE was confirmed by definite histopathology, specific polymerase chain reaction and serology results. This is a rare case of unusual macroscopic presentation of AE that posed immense diagnostic challenges and had an eventful course. To our knowledge this is the first case of an autochthonous infection in this particular geographic area of Germany, the federal state of Saxony. The aim of this study was to investigate whether residents' perception of their proximate environment differs depending on their level of PA in transport and recreation. We conducted a cross-sectional survey with residents of six different parts of the city of Cologne, Germany. The sample of 470 adults (52.8\% females; mean age = 35.5 ± 13.8 years) filled in the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), as well as the European Environmental Questionnaire ALPHA. To distinguish between residents with "low" and "high" PA, we split the samples into two on the basis of the specific median in transport- and recreation-related PA. In the "high" vs. "low" PA group of the overall sample, we noted 4\%-16\% more "PA favourable" environmental perceptions in seven of the 15 environmental variables. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to investigate associations of socio-demographic correlates and transport- and recreation-related PA on the dependent variables of the environmental perception. In this case, levels of PA were significant predictors for eight of the 15 items concerning environmental perceptions. Thus, the present study introduces the idea that residents with higher levels of transport and recreational PA may perceive their environment in a more "PA-favourable" way than residents with lower levels.}, language = {en} }
