Three phases of lymph node changes were observed. 1: physiological follicular hyperplasia (3 and 6 weeks p.i.). 2: Alterations of germinal centers: loss of follicular mande zone, fragmentation or sclerosis (12 and 24 weeks p.i.). 3: Partial depletion of T-lymphocytes, accumulation of plasma cells, increased numbers of syncytial giant cells, hemophgocytosis in the sinuses (ab out 1 year p.i.). The thymus of the juvenile animals showed first changes 12 and 24 weeks after infection with focalloss of immature (and Ki-67 positive) cortical thymocytes, leading to severe accidental involution of the thymuses one year after infection and reduced numbers of Hassalls corpuscles. These investigations show the value of this animal model for the study of morphology and pathogenesis of AIDS.},

To now, studies are concerned with the psychopathology and personality of NUDpatients, their illness behaviour, and with the relation between stress and abdominal pain. A critical review of these studies revea1ed, that among the psycho1ogical variables majnly anxiety and illness behaviour seems to playa central role in NUD. However. future studjes should focus more on the distinction towards other func{\"u}onal disorders and on the djfferentation within the heterogeneous group of NUD~ patients (especially with regard to physiological variables). The binding indices range over more than five orders of rriagnitude between the strongest hepatocarcinogen aflatoxin B 1 and the limit of detection of a binding with 100 f-LCi 14C-labelled chemical. The order of magnitude of binding is therefore a surprisingly good quantitative measure for carcinogenicity. The pattern of DNA binding sites is important especially for small alkylating agents where the determination of total binding might indicate a higher carcinogenic potency than is actually observed.},

Ein nichtlinearer Verlauf ist nicht nur bei den epigenetischen Kanzerogenen wahrscheinlich, sondern auch bei den DNA-bindenden. Echte Schwellen sind aber nur in solchen F{\"a}llen zu erwarten, wo kein endogenes Korrelat besteht. Immerhin k{\"o}nnen auch steile Nichtlinearit{\"a}ten zu einer drastischen Risikoreduktion f{\"u}hren, so daß die Anstrengungen dahin gehen sollten, die Steigung und den Bereich des {\"u}berproportionalen Abfalls experimentell zu zeigen. In einer heterogenen Population kann die 0 0- sis-Wirkungs-Kurve zus{\"a}tzliche "Wellen" bekommen und wird dadurch grunds{\"a}tzlich flacher. Im Extremfall ergibt sich eine lineare Dosis-Wirkungs-Beziehung unabh{\"a}ngig vom Wirkmechanismus des Kanzerogens. Diese Proportionalit{\"a}t zwischen tiefster Dosis und Effekt wird bei genotoxischen Kanzerogenen aus mechanistischen Gr{\"u}nden schon f{\"u}r eine homogene Population postuliert, doch kann dies in einer heterogenen Population auch bei epigenetischen Kanzerogenen in Frage kommen.},

We insist that the interiors of the seeds and the cover elements are pairwise disjoint, respectively, but they can touch. We call the contact graph of a cover a cover contact graph (CCG). We are interested in three types of tasks, both in the general case and in the special case of seeds on a line: (a) deciding whether a given seed set has a connected CCG, (b) deciding whether a given graph has a realization as a CCG on a given seed set, and (c) bounding the sizes of certain classes of CCG's. Concerning (a) we give efficient algorithms for the case that seeds are points and show that the problem becomes hard if seeds and covers are disks. Concerning (b) we show that this problem is hard even for point seeds and disk covers (given a fixed correspondence between graph vertices and seeds). Concerning (c) we obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of CCG's for point seeds.},

  abstract  = {Human heterophile antibodies (HHA) that are present in normal human sera (NHS)play an important role in hyperacute xenograft rejection. The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence, mode of action and molecular specificity of HHA in NHS that are directed against xenogeneic Iymphocytes (isolated from mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, cattle and pig) and isolated rat pancreatic islets. All sera contained variable amounts of HHA that killed the target cells via the classical complement pathway. The cytotoxic activity of these HHA was specifically inhibited by certain carbohydrates (a-D-melibiose, ß-Iactose, ß-gentiobiose, ß-cellobiose, D-mannose, N-acetyl-ß-D-mannosamine and a-D-rhamnose) and by rat IgM. By means of affinity chromatography with immobilized inhibitors we obtained an antibody preparation of mainly IgG type from NHS (up to 3.5 mg/IO ml serum) that reacted strongly with rat lymphocytes and isolated rat pancreatic islets. Though thus far residual xenospecific antibody activity has remained in the sera even after multiple affinity chromatography, these data suggest that specific elimination of HHA is feasible and that it may be thus possible to overcome a major obstacle to xenotransplantation.},

Charakteristisch ist auch die Angst um die n{\"a}chsten Angeh{\"o}rigen. In ihren Selbstanklagen erwarten und fordern die Patienten f{\"u}r sich die schrecklichsten Strafen. Diese wenigen Leitsymptome kehren in jeder Krankheitsphase gleichf{\"o}rmig wieder. Andere depressive Symptome wie Denkhemmung und psychomotorische Hemmung treten dagegen v{\"o}llig in den Hintergrund. Der Krankheitsverlauf ist streng monopolar. Die Dauer der Krankheitsphasen wurde von Leonhard mit durchschnittlich 5,8 Monaten angegeben. Sie betrug bei unseren Patienten durchschnittlich 4,1 Monate. Das klinische Erscheinungsbild ist durch moderne Behandlungsstrategien nicht wesentlich zu beeinflussen. Eine famili{\"a}re Belastung mit affektiven Psychosen findet sich nur sehr selten.},

Im zweiten Trimenon waren geh{\"a}uft Infektionen aufgetreten. Zehn von 80 M{\"u}ttern von Kontrollpersonen erinnerten ebenfalls eine Infektion. Im Vergleich zu den Kontrollen halfen M{\"u}tter Schizophrener im 5. Schwangerschaftsmonat h{\"a}ufiger Infektionen als in den anderen Gestationsmonaten (p < 0,05). Bei "famili{\"a}ren" und "sporadischen" Schizophrenen gem{\"a}ß DSM III-R kamen im Vergleich zu Kontrollen Infektionen in gleicher H{\"a}ufigkeit vor. Wurden hingegen in der Diagnostik schizophrener Psychosen die Definitionen von Leonhard zugrunde gelegt, ergaben sich signifikante Unterschiede! Bei den systematischen Schizophrenen (denen nach Leonhard keine erbliche Disposition zugrunde liegt) waren Infektionen geh{\"a}uft im 2. Schwangerschaftsdrittel aufgetreten, sowohl im Vergleich zu Kontrollen (p < 0,01) als auch im Vergleich zu den unsystematischen Schizophrenen, die haupts{\"a}chlich genetisch bedingt zu sein scheinen (p < 0,001). Infektionserkrankungen im 5. Schwangerschaftsmonat waren ausschließlich bei den M{\"u}ttern von systematischen Schizophrenen vorgekommen. Bei diesen Krankheitsformen scheinen Infektionen im 2. Schwangerschaftstrimenon und insbesondere im 5. Schwangerschaftsmonat wichtige {\"a}tiologische Faktoren zu sein und k{\"o}nnten miturs{\"a}chlich sein f{\"u}r die beschriebenen zytoarchitektonischen Aberrationen im Zentralnervensystem von chronisch Schizophrenen.},

  abstract  = {In einem Kollektiv von 130 MR-tomographisch untersuchten psychiatrischen Patienten (axiale T2-SE-Sequenz) wurden Zahl und r{\"a}umliche Verteilung von hyperintensen Marklagerl{\"a}sionen ("white matter lesions"; WM L) erfaßt und die Ventricle-to-brain-Ratio (VBR) bestimmt. Eine Konfigurationsfrequenzanalyse auf der Grundlage der r{\"a}umlichen WMLVerteilung erlaubte die Abgrenzung von vier Patientengruppen: 1. keine WML (n = 35), 2. WML rechts frontotemporal (n = 23), 3. WML bifrontal (n = 12), 4. WML ubiquit{\"a}r (n = 16). Die w{\"a}hrend 3 Jahren beobachteten psychopathologischen Symptome dieser Patienten wurden retrospektiv nach dem AMDP-Systemdokumentiert. In der Gruppe mit ubiquit{\"a}ren WML {\"u}berwogen organisch-psychopathologische Ttems, die VER war gr{\"o}ßer als in den anderen Gruppen (ANOVA;p < 0,001). Die r{\"a}umliche W M L- Verteilung erkl{\"a}rte 10,24 \% der Gesamtvarianz psychopathologischer M erkmalsverteilung in den Gruppen. Das Patientenalter (MANCOVA; p < 0,021), nicht aber die VER hattesignifikanten Einfluß auf das psychopathologische Symptomprofil. Nach Ausblendung der Patientengruppe mit ubiquit{\"a}ren WMLblieb der Einfluß der WML-Verteilung auf die psychopathologische Symptomatiksignifikantc (p <0,05). Bifrontale WML waren mit Denkst{\"o}rung, rechts frontotemporale WML mit affektiven Symptomen assoziiert. Die Befunde sprechen f{\"u}r einen Einfluß der r{\"a}umlichen Verteilung unspezifischer Marklagerl{\"a}sionen auf die psychopathologische Symptomatik.},

  abstract  = {During the past 50 to over 100 million years communities evolved in the tropics which attained unprecedented levels of biodiversity, strikingly represented by evergreen lowland rain forests offering home to more than 50\% of all the world's extant species. Within only some 30 years human action reduced the area covered with tropical rain forests to about half of its former size, thereby negatively affecting local and global functions of the biosphere and exterminating an unknown number of species. With an exponentially increasing rate we are throwing away our and all future generations' biological heritage. We destroy the most complicated, scientifically most interesting living systems before we have gained any knowledge of their structures ,and dynamics. To understand the particular structures and dynamics of tropical communities means in the first place to understand the causes and consequences of their ten- to more than hundredfold higher alphadiversity (as compared to temperate systems). This problem has a historical dimension and a functional side requiring answers as to the nature of the proximate mechanisms of its maintenance. My review is only concerned with the latter aspect, and its maIn emphasis is on the gaps in our knowledge. Two sets of hypotheses have been developed for explaining the high within-commUnIty diversity. (1) According to the classical concept interspecific niche competition and subsequent niche separation are the main forces determining the structure of the community. These so-called equilibrium models have been contrasted in recent times with (2) non-equilibrium models. These models do not attribute the decisive role to interspecific competition. Strong niche overlaps are presumed to be very common within species-rich communities. Continuous stochastic local disturbances are assumed to prevent the achievement of any long-term equilibrium (climax) state. Being on the right spot at the right time is regarded as most important. Whether oneor a combination of both models provide the best key for understanding the structure of a special section within a community will certainly depend on many properties of the species at debate (mobility, disr.ersal, fertility etc.). For the vast majority of tropical organisms all such information is at present unavailable. The principles governing the structure of communities is just one of the very ,basic open problems. Another very prominent question is how the qualitatively very rich, however quantitatively poor resources are distributed among the members of highly diverse guilds of consumers and decomposers. Does the scarcity rather favour generalists or specialists, are small species overrepresented, are resources more extensively used than in temperate communities? One important property is fairly well established: Populations of most tropical species seem to be very small. Since a) in very many' cases distribution range is obviously very limited, since b) predator pressure is generally assumed to be higher in the tropics and c) recent - perhaps unduely generalized - results claim abundance fluctuations in the tropics fully comparable in their dimensions to those in the temperate zone, the question arises as to how these small populations can persist for seemingly long periods of time and avoid rapid extinction. Additionally treated PoInts concern detritivore communities, plant animal Interactions, key stone groups. Saving biodiversity in general and the tropical species and community richness in particular is one of the most urgent tasks of our generation, and biologists have to play a still more prominent role in this extremely important endeavor than they have in the past decades.},
