N2 - Within the scope of this thesis 30 new complexes and coordination polymers could be synthesized, starting from borate-containing salts and ionic liquids (ILs) as well as lanthanide compounds. Therefore, manifold synthesis strategies were applied, including salt metatheses, solvothermal syntheses and ionothermal syntheses. The main focus within the synthesis of desired products was set on the properties of the compounds, particularly on their photoluminescence behavior. Both cyanoborates and oxoborates were investigated regarding their potential in constructing new coordination polymers. Acids and ionic liquids with dicyano-, tricyano- and tetracyanoborate anions were used, leading to diverse coordination compounds due to their varying number of cyano groups. By applying ionothermal methods, the compounds 1∞[Ln(NO3)2{B(CN)4}(H2O)4] (Ln = La, Eu) and [EMIm]1∞[LaNO3{B(CN)4}3(H2O)3] could be synthesized from the ionic liquid [EMIm][B(CN)4], showing a transformation of the ionic liquid into a coordination polymer incorporating both cation and anion of the IL. Remarkably, it is possible to control, which of the products is formed by changing the reaction temperature. Single crystals of the compound 3∞[La{C2F5B(CN)3}3] could also be synthesized by ionothermal methods. With the knowledge on the crystal structure, it was possible to identify the compounds 3∞[Ln{C2F5B(CN)3}3] (Ln = Eu, Ho) as isotypic structures, thereby allowing further investigations on their properties, including their luminescence features. By reacting lanthanide chlorides with the acid H[BH2(CN)2] in pyridine (py), one-dimensional coordination polymers [H(py)2]1∞[LnCl2{BH2(CN)2}2(py)2]·0.5py (Ln = Ce, Pr) could be obtained. Under similar solvothermal conditions, but in MeCN as solvent, the formation of networks of the constitution 3∞[Ln2{BH2(CN)2}9]·[Ln(CH3CN)9] (Ln = Ce, Eu, Tb) is observed instead. The three-dimensional coordination polymers 3∞[Ln{BH(CN)3}3] (Ln = Eu, Tb) were also synthesized in MeCN, however starting from the acid [H3O][BH(CN)3]. The compounds described show characteristic luminescence for spectroscopically relevant ions, based on 5d- 4f- and 4f-4f-transitions, respectively. Thereby, the observed luminescence is mainly based on a direct excitation of the respective lanthanide ions. With the bis-salicylatoborate-anion (= BSB−), it was possible to synthesize one-dimensional, strand-like coordination polymers 1∞[Ln(BSB)3(py)2] (Ln = Y, La – Nd, Sm) as well as twodimensional, sheet-like structures 2∞[Ln(BSB)3(py)] (Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb – Er), starting from Na[BSB] and LnCl3 under solvothermal conditions in pyridine. The molecular complex [ErCl2(py)4BSB] allowed further insights into the formation of the described compounds, as it proves a gradual substitution of chloride ligands by [BSB]−-anions. The compounds with the [BSB]−-anion show photoluminescence features ascribed to different processes. 1∞[Y(BSB)3(py)2] shows fluorescence originating from the [BSB]−-anion, while 1∞[Ln(BSB)3(py)2] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) and 2∞[Ln(BSB)3(py)] (Ln = Sm, Tb, Dy) show luminescence based on 5d-4f- and 4f-4f-transitions. These are quite intense, as an antenna effect of coordinating [BSB]−-anions can be observed. The compounds 2∞[Ln(BSB)3(py)] (Ln = Eu, Ho) prove as exceptions, as direct excitation is mainly observed for Eu3+, while Ho3+ shows reabsorption processes. By mixing different contents of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in the one-dimensional coordination polymers 1∞[EuxTb1−x(BSB)3(py)2] (x = 0.75, 0.50, 0.25), it is possible to create mixed luminescence colors. With the complex [B2O(C2O4)2(dmf)2] (dmf = dimethylformamide) and the coordination polymer 1∞[Tb{o-C6H4(CO2)2}(H2O)6][PHB]2 (PHB− = phthalatoborate) the exceptional position of the [BSB]−-anions within the class of spiroborates could be revealed, as it proved as only spiroborate anion within this work, that could be fully incorporated in the desired products. This is benficial to a great extent, as similar spiroborate anions like the [PHB]−-anion tend to loose functional groups in the presence of Lewis-acid compounds. Altogether, it was possible to successfully synthesize numerous luminescent coordination polymers with cyano- and oxoborates in this work. Depending on the ionic radii of the used lanthanide chloride and the amount of the ligand thiazole coordination polymers as 1∞[LnCl3(thz)6]·thz (Ln = La, Ce), dimeric compounds [Ln2Cl6(thz)8]·3(thz) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd), [Pr2Cl6(thz)8] and monomeric complexes [LnCl3(thz)4]2·thz (Ln = Sm, Eu , Tb, Ho) were derived at room temperature. Using tempera-ture-dependent powder diffraction methods, in-situ IR-spectroscopy and DTA/TG measure-ments it was demonstrated that there is a stepwise, thermal induced release of thiazole molecules out of the structures to back-formation of crystalline lanthanide chloride in the cases of the coordination polymer 1∞[LaCl3(thz)6]·thz and the dimer [Pr2Cl6(thz)8]. This could be a cyclic process requiring the elusive ligand thiazole to be reabsorbed. Furthermore, hy-drous phases were also obtained like the tetranuclear cluster [Pr4Cl10(OH)2(thz)8(H2O)2]. It was possible to generate a series of various coordination polymers and complexes under solvothermal conditions adding suitable linker molecules into the reaction system of lantha-nide chloride and thiazole. Suitable linkers or end-on ligands are a range of ditopic pyridyl ligands like 4,4'-biypridine (bipy), 1,2-di-(4-pyridyl)ethene (dpe), trans-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (tppe), 1,2-di-(4-pyridyl)ethane (dpa), diazine as pyrazine (pyz) and pyrimi-dine (pym) as well as azole like 1,2,4-triazole (tzH) and pyrazole (pzH). By single-X-ray struc-ture determination and powder diffraction it was possible to characterize three dimensional networks 3∞[LnCl3(dpa)2]·thz (Ln = Ce - Sm, Gd - Lu), layer structures 2∞[Ln2Cl6(bipy)3(thz)2]·thz (Ln = La, Ce), 2∞[LnCl3(tzH)2(thz)]·thz (Ln = Pr, Sm - Gd) and strand like coordination polymers 1∞[LnCl3(bipy)(thz)2]·thz (Ln = Pr, Nd), 1∞[LnCl3(bipy)(thz)2]·thz (Ln = Sm, Eu - Er, Yb), 1∞[Ln2Cl6(dpe)2(thz)4]·dpe (Ln = Ce, Nd), 1∞[LnCl3(dpe)(thz)2]·0.5 (dpe) 0.5 (thz) (Ln = Sm, Gd - Dy, Er, Yb), 1∞[HoCl3(dpe)(thz)2]·thz, 1∞[La2Cl6(dpa)(thz)6], 1∞[Pr2Cl6(pyz) (thz)6], 1∞[Ln2Cl6(tzH)4(thz)2] (Ln = Pr, Sm, Gd) as well as the complexes [LnCl3(tppe)2(thz)2] (Ln = Nd, Tb, Ho, Er), [Ln2Cl6(pyz)(thz)6]·2(thz) (Ln = Tb, Er), [Ln2Cl6(pym)2(thz)4] (Ln = Tb , Er), [LnCl3(pyr)3(thz)2] (Ln = Pr, Gd). Furthermore, nearly all of the generated structures were investigated with regards to their photoluminescent and thermal properties.   Moreover, one dimensional coordination polymers 1∞[PrCl2(amt)(py)3] (amt- = 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazolate), [HNEt3]1∞[LnCl2(amt)2] (Ln = Ho, Er) and complexes [LnCl2(Mbim)(py)3]·py (Ln = Y, Er; Mbim = 2-mercaptobenzimdiazolate) were obtained by direct coordination of sulfur at Ln3+-centers. The formation of luminescent thin films of the coordination polymers 3∞[Sr1-xEux(Im)2] (x = 0 - 1) and the MOFs 3∞[Tb(Im)3] and 3∞[Ce(Im)3ImH]·ImH on nanostructured alumina substrates (AAO-substrates) was enabled by a new in-situ coating method based on a solvent free melt synthesis. Various layer thicknesses as well as different degrees of coverage were achieved. For the in-situ deposition of 3∞[Sr0.95Eu0.05(Im)2] two different coating strategies for the AAO substrates were established. In addition to the melt approach an electride induced coating method was carried out. Extraordinary baryte rose analogue crystals were observed on the AAO surface for the electride induced coating method. The deposition of the MOFs 3∞[Tb(Im)3] and 3∞[Ce(Im)3ImH]·ImH also took place via CVD processes (chemical vapor deposition). Thin luminescent films of the framework 3∞[Eu(Im)2] on (0001)-sapphire sub-strates were created by a new femto-PLD-process (femto-pulsed-laser-deposition). The films displayed a switchable transparency depending on the wavelength of the incoming light. 3∞[Sr0.95Eu0.05(Im)2], 3∞[Tb(Im)3] and 3∞[Ce(Im)3ImH]·ImH were examined as potential sensors or detectors regarding eight solvents and four gases. The exposure of the networks to water lead to a complete loss of luminescence intensity. MeOH-exposure is followed by a batho-chromic shift of the chromaticity of 3∞[Sr0.95Eu0.05(Im)2] from turquoise to orange. Acetone, pyridine, toluene, hexane, acetonitrile and dichloromethane increase the luminescence in-tensity of 3∞[Sr0.95Eu0.05(Im)2] and 3∞[Tb(Im)3]. The luminescence intensity of 3∞[Ce(Im)3ImH]·ImH is increased by acetonitrile as well as dichloromethane, but decreased under the influence of the other investigated solvents. The interaction of O2 and CO2 lead to a decrease of luminescence intensity by a turn-off-effect with the compounds 3∞[Tb(Im)3] and 3∞[Ce(Im)3ImH]·ImH, whereas no influence on the luminescence intensity of 3∞[Sr0.95Eu0.05(Im)2] was observed during exposure to N2, Ar, O2 and CO2. New coordination polymers 3∞[La4(Im)12(ImH)5]∙xImH (x = 2 - 3) and 3∞[Gd(Im)3] were synthe-sized as missing parts in the field of rare earth imidazolates. Both networks and the known alkaline earth imidazolates 2∞[Ca(Im)2(ImH)2], 3∞[Sr(Im)2] and 3∞[Ba(Im)2] as well as the rare earth imidazolates 3∞[Y(Im)3], 3∞[Ln(Im)3ImH]·ImH (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm), 3∞[Gd2(Im)6(ImH)1.5]·0.5 ImH and 3∞[Tb(Im)3] were used as host lattice for the intrinsic luminescence of the Ln-ions Ce3+, Sm3+, Eu2+, Tb3+, Dy3+ and Yb3+. In addition to co-doping, larger miscibilities and possible phase boundaries were investigated. The correlation be-tween structure and luminescence as well as the possibility of color tuning based on additive color mixing of the emission colors were explored with the obtained bulk materials. Furthermore, the solvent free approach was expanded to alkaline earth and lanthanide met-als and the bicyclic ligand 1H-benzimidazole. The monomeric complexes [M(BIm)2(BImH)4] (M = Ca, Sr, Eu) and the two dimensional coordination polymers ²[AE(BIm)2] (AE = Mg, Ba) and ²[Eu(BIm)2(BImH)2] were synthesized and fully characterized. In the case of the Ba con-taining network two polymorphic forms of the network were obtained. N2 - This work elaborates on the use of solvent free approach towards the generation of coordination polymers based on the 3d transition metals Mn, Fe, Co and Zn by use of N-heterocyclic amine ligand melts. Metals employed were either used as elemental metals in a redox-based approach derived from previous works or in the form of metal chlorides in an adduct-based strategy. Products obtained from reactions with the ligands imidazole (ImH), pyrazole (PzH), benzimidazole (bzImH), 1,2,3-triazole (1,2,3-TzH), 1,2,4-triazole (1,2,4-TzH) and piperazine (pipz) led to a variety of new compounds and crystal structures, especially with the ligand piperazine. The obtained products were subsequently used for studies in structure-property relations in the fields of polarizability and in the case of the triazolate frameworks for investigations into the dependence between luminescent properties and physisorption properties. Among these newly discovered and characterized compounds, the polymeric character and degree of linkage varies from complexes (zero-dimensional) such as [CoCl2(pipz)] (26) and [ZnCl2(pipz)] (27), to strands (one-dimensional) such as 1∞[TMCl2(py)2(pipz)] (TM = Mn (29), Fe (30), Co (31)), nets (two-dimensional) such as 2∞[Fe2Cl4(pipz)3]∙(pipz) (25) and frameworks (three-dimensional) such as 3∞[FeCl2(pipz)] (32). Thermal analysis and subsequent changes in reaction conditions were able to show the relations between the obtained products and their thermodynamic stability not only in the aforementioned products, but also for a number of previously known compounds, most notably the imidazolates 3∞[TM3(Im)6(ImH)2] (TM = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3)). Introducing small quantities of Mn2+ into the metal organic framework (MOF) 3∞[Zn(1,2,3-Tz)2] (21) leads to the compound 3∞[Zn0,9Mn0,1(1,2,3-Tz)2] (22) and activation of photoluminescent properties whilst retaining initial microporosity. This luminescent, microporous framework was used as a model system for the analysis of changes in photoluminescence during physisorption of several analyst gases at different temperatures. The obtained results could play a highly important role for the characterization of potential sensor materials and can be employed as a step-stone for mechanistic considerations in these highly interesting structure-property relations. The successful redox-reactions of elemental metals with the ligands ImH, PzH, bzImH and 1,2,3-TzH allowed for an investigation of dielectric properties, comparing the influence of sample composition (compacted powders vs. mechanically prepared pellets) as well as structural features such as rigidity of crystal structures and their dimensional linkage on the permittivity of a family of compounds with very similar compositions. Additionally, these properties were also analysed with regards to changes in temperatures ranging from -100 °C and up to 150 °C. In this particular instance, the analysis of dielectric properties conducted on the MOFs 3∞[TM(1,2,3-Tz)2] (TM = Mn (18), Fe (19), Co (20), Zn (21)) contributes to another highly important field of properties in MOF chemistry, which has been discussed for quite some time, but is still underdeveloped. N2 - This thesis deals with the synthesis and characterization of coordination polymers and MOFs of the lanthanides and barium with different azolic N-heterocycles. A total of 18 new organic-inorganic hybrid materials, as well as a series of co-doped compounds is presented. Besides the structural characterization of these materials from X-ray diffraction powder data, the focus of the investigations is on the thermal and photoluminescence spectroscopic properties. The lanthanides La – Lu, except Eu and Pm, can be reacted with 1H-1,2,3-triazole to give the series of the isotypic dense 3D-MOFs 3{infinite}[Ln(Tz*)3]. Investigation of the photoluminescence properties of these compounds reveals a broad range of different luminescence phenomena, including the first observation of an intrinsic inner-filter effect of the Ln3+-ions. The structure of this isotypic series of compounds was solved and refined from X-ray powder diffraction data. A 2D-polymorph of these compounds 2{infinite}[Ln(Tz*)3], is observed for Ln = Sm, Tb and was characterized by single crystal data. The reaction of Eu with 1H-benzotriazole yields the 1D-coordination polymer 1{infinite}[Eu(Btz)2(BtzH)2], which is the first example of a divalent rare earth benzotriazolate. Analysis of the thermal properties reveals the transformation to the 3D-MOF 3{infinite}[Eu(Btz)2] at higher temperatures. The structure of this material was also solved from X-ray powder diffraction data. Investigation of the photoluminescence properties of the co-doped compounds 3{infinite}[Ba1-xEux(Im)2], which were obtained from reaction of the salt-like hydrides BaH2 and EuH2 with imidazole, show that the synthesis of luminescent MOF materials by co-doping of non-luminescent networks with luminescence centers is possible. The structure of these materials was solved from X-ray powder diffraction data of the undoped compound 3{infinite}[BaEu(Im)2]. Structural characterization of materials from X-ray powder diffraction data is an important aspect of this thesis. A method is presented, which allows, by indexing a diffractogram, intensity extraction and structure solution by charge flipping, to solve the structure of a material, ab initio, from X-ray powder diffraction data exclusively. Moreover it is shown how to refine structures with a high amount of weakly scattering atoms, using rigid body constraints. The structure solutions of 3{infinite}[Ga(Tz)2], 3{infinite}[Sr(Im)2]:Ce and 3{infinite}[Yb(Im)3]ImH from X-ray powder diffraction data are further examples for the suc¬cessful application of the method presented within this thesis.
