N2 - AVPR1A and NOS1 play an important role in recent research concerning pair bonding behaviour and impulsivity. We aimed at showing a connection between genetic variants of these two genes and sexual activity, constancy and impulsivity. We claimed that the long allele of AVPR1A RS3 polymorphism is associated with sexual activity and less constancy. We also claimed that the short allele of NOS1 ex1f-VNTR is associated with impulsivity and extraversion and consecutively also with sexual activity. Concerning the NOS1 polymorphism, our hypothesis could be proofed. Homozygous participants for the short allele of NOS1 ex1f-VNTR showed significant higher scores for impulsivity and extraversion, whereas participants with at least one long allele scored significant higher for inhibitness. Unfortunately there was no association between increased sexuality and these behaviours. On the psychometric level there also was no connection between impulsivity and infidelity. All together we must say that we could only replicate the direct association, whereas the indirect hypothesis could not be proofed. There also were significant results for both polymorphisms RS1 and RS3 of the vasopressin receptor gene AVPR1A. Homozygote participants for the long allele of RS3 scored significant higher on achievement-orientation, extraversion and self-confidence, but also for infidelity and sexuality. Concerning RS1, homozygote participants for the long allele scored higher on impulsivity, whereas participants with at least one short allele seem to be sexually more active. In summary one can say, that all hypotheses could be proofed, at least partly- knowing the limitation that the sample was quite small and all significances for multiple testing were uncorrected - and can be used as a basis for further studies concerning AVPR1A and NOS1 and their influence on human behaviour. N2 - In this thesis I investigate the behaviour of worker bees while incubating brood, heat transfer from bees to the sealed brood, the thermophysical properties of the brood nest and special aspects of brood nest architecture that are relevant for this topic but have not been investigated so far. My work comprises behavioural observations and thermographic measurements of individual bees, simulation of worker bees’ heating behaviour and measurement of temperature changes within the brood comb, the measurement of thermophysical properties of the brood comb and cell walls (thermal conductivity and transmission of thermal radiation), the analysis of brood cell temperatures as a result of the behaviour of worker bees, the analysis of the number and spatial distribution of brood gaps (analysis in 2-D and 3-D with regard to both sides of a comb) and the engineering of specific computer software which was indispensable to achieve these results. One major result of this work is the discovery and description of a very remarkable, hitherto unknown behaviour of the honeybee: the maintenance of high thorax temperatures (TTh) during long-time visits to open cells (“gaps”) which are scattered at low rates among the sealed brood. Here I show that the maintenance of high TTh is not related to the contents of the visited cells (anyway, they were empty in most cases) but to the presence of sealed brood which is directly adjacent to and sharing common cell walls with the visited cell. The discovery of this behaviour casts a positive light on apparently “lazy” bees and provides an explanation for long-time cell-visits with durations of several ten minutes which were described but not fully understood in earlier works by other authors. Moreover, this behaviour is of high relevance for brood incubation itself because the heated thorax is deep in the comb (almost down to the middle wall) where heat loss to the air is minimized and where up to 6 surrounding pupa cells can be warmed simultaneously. In comparison to specific brood incubation behaviour on the comb surface (pressing the thorax onto the brood caps), where only one or parts of three brood caps may be in touch with a heated thorax, heating inside cells with the same TTh is up to 2,6 times more efficient. The measurement of thermophysical properties of the brood comb and the simulation of worker heating under controlled conditions show that the comb warms up slowly and supports local heating rather than a rapid spread of heat all over the area. The radius-of-influence of a single cell visitor depends on its TTh and on the duration of the cell visit. Increases of brood temperature as far as three cells away from the cell visitor may be detected. The brood incubation behaviour via gaps (i.e. open cells) which I describe in this work does not only give new insights into bee behaviour. It also allows a reconsideration of the gaps them¬selves and their usefulness to the bees. A specific computer software (“CombUse 2.0”) which I developed for this work allowed me to register and analyze the spatial distribution of gaps with high precision on the level of cells, in contrast to rough estimations of brood areas and gap numbers which are commonly used in bee-breeding and population assessments. The analysis of the spatial distribution of gaps in the sealed brood area shows that even at small proportions of gaps (ca. 4 to 10 %, common to healthy colonies), a surprisingly large number (88 % to 99 %, if the three-dimensional distribution of gaps is considered) of sealed brood cells is within the reach of brood incubating worker bees visiting these gaps. Although brood incubation behaviour inside cells is very difficult to detect and observe, the data presented in this work strongly suggest that heating inside cells is an important part of nest climate control and other aspects of social life in honeybee colonies. N2 - One of the still incompletely understood problems is the accurate mechanisms of work division and co-ordination within bee colonies Apis mellifera. On the one side the sensory and neural equipment of each individual must contain the potential for communication and task accomplishment that is viable for the daily organisation of a honeybee hive, on the other hand reliable mechanisms for planning and fulfilling future demands like winter preparations are vitally important. This work investigates selected aspects of the underlying communication and regulation aspects of these demands. The cognitive abilities of the single worker bee regarding their role as foraging and collecting force for the beehive are examined. The process of recognizing and processing the visual cues found while foraging is examined by means of the DMTS – paradigm. A high degree of abstraction while processing the patterns as well as the memorisation of complex samples is shown. Furthermore the breeding temperature as one factor influencing pupae development and its influence on subsequent behaviour and life history of the adult workers is analysed. The available work can link differences in the brood temperature with the resulting different patterns of behaviour and life history of worker bees. The temperature levels while raising the different groups of honeybees were chosen as 32°C, 35°C and 36°C to rea ch a variation between the from other groups reported as normal, the lowest and highest breeding temperature and to examine the resulting female workers. Both the results of the behavioural observation of worker bees that are active inside the colony as well as the overall comparison of their life activity and lifespan show significant differences between these groups of bees that were raised on varying brood temperatures. N2 - This work started out to analyze visual influences on leg placement and on the climbing behavior of the fly Drosophila melanogaster. Whereas leg placement turned out to be predominantly under tactile control, climbing is indeed under tight visual control both with regard to the decision to initiate the behavior (motivational control) as well as with regard to the execution of climbing. A gap-crossing paradigm has been developed to facilitate a detailed study and the kinematics of climbing over gaps of various widths has been quantified using a 3D high-speed video analysis system developed for this purpose. Three major behavioral adaptations help the fly to exploit fully the limits of its leg span in order to overcome gaps of up to 170% of its own body length. Climbing is initiated dependent on gap width. Vain attempts to overcome insurmountably broad gaps are avoided. Analysis showed that the fly uses parallax motion generated during the approach to estimate the width of a gap. Some of the results of the research on the fly’s walking behavior have been implemented in a modified hexapod walking robot, and the improvements have been quantified.
