Most behaviors are driven by more than one motive, yet it is unclear how different motives interact and how such motive combinations affect the neural computation of the behaviors they drive. To answer this question, we induced two prosocial motives simultaneously (multi-motive condition) and separately (single motive conditions). After the different motive inductions, participants performed the same choice task in which they allocated points in favor of the other person (prosocial choice) or in favor of themselves (egoistic choice). We used fMRI to assess prosocial choice-related brain responses and drift diffusion modeling to specify how motive combinations affect individual components of the choice process. Our results showed that the combination of the two motives in the multi-motive condition increased participants' choice biases prior to the behavior itself. On the neural level, these changes in initial prosocial bias were associated with neural responses in the bilateral dorsal striatum. In contrast, the efficiency of the prosocial decision process was comparable between the multi-motive and the single-motive conditions. These findings provide insights into the computation of prosocial choices in complex motivational states, the motivational setting that drives most human behaviors . Although the trait chronic regulatory focus has been linked to impulse buying, no evidence yet exists for an effect of situational regulatory focus and no research has examined whether the fit of chronic and situational regulatory focus can influence impulse buying with actual consumptive consequences rather than purchase intentions. Two laboratory experiments (total N = 250) manipulated situational regulatory focus before providing opportunities for impulse buying. In addition, cognitive constraint was manipulated as a potential boundary condition for regulatory focus effects. Situational promotion focus increased impulse buying relative to situational prevention focus in participants with strong chronic promotion, consistent with regulatory fit theory and independently of cognitive constraint. Surprisingly, situational promotion focus also increased impulse buying in participants with strong chronic prevention, but only under low cognitive constraint. These results may be explained by diverging mediating cognitive processes for promotion vs. prevention focus' effect on impulse buying. Future research must focus more on combining relevant states and traits in predicting consumer behavior. Marketing implications are discussed. Based on the idea of postulating different levels of approach avoidance motivation, the Reflective-Impulsive Model of Behavior (RIM, Strack & Deutsch, 2004) is applied to relief and approach avoidance. The RIM differentiates between an impulsive and a reflective system of information processing, with both systems working in relative independence from each other. Two central variables moderate the relation between relief and approach avoidance. The first is the psychological system in which approach avoidance is processed and assessed. Two levels of approach avoidance are distinguished: an impulsive distance orientation (distance change in relation to specific stimuli) and a reflective goal orientation (attainment of positive versus avoidance of negative end states). The second is the psychological system in which relief developed: In the impulsive system, relief develops as the affect that is conditioned to the absence of negative states; in the reflective system, relief develops as a result of goal-oriented behaviour of controlling or preventing of negative stimulation. The thesis looks at both moderators (level of approach avoidance and psychological system of development of relief) at once. The central prediction for the impulsive distance orientation is: Relief leads to an approach distance orientation (distance reduction), independent from the system in which relief develops. The central prediction for the reflective goal orientation is: Relief leads to an avoidance goal orientation (control of negative end states). This latter prediction is only made for the case when relief was caused by (develops in) the reflective system, that is by one’s own, goal-directed behaviour; it is further necessary for an avoidance goal orientation that the relief state cannot certainly reached, instead there always has to uncertainty in the control of negative states. The methodology in the thesis is based on studies of aversive conditioning. In most studies, a differentiation paradigm is applied. The impulsive relief is operationalized via a classically conditioned relief (aversive CS-), whereas the reflective relief is operationalized via an active avoidance paradigm which ensures the methodological comparability of “reflective relief” to “impulsive relief”. The predictions are as follows: Prediction A: Relief will elicit positive affective valence and an approach distance orientation. This should be true for both relief that is caused by the impulsive system and for relief that is caused by the reflective system (Experiments 2-3). Prediction B: More positive valence of relief—caused by a larger change of affective states—will elicit a stronger approach distance orientation (Experiment 4). Prediction C: Relief caused by the impulsive system will not elicit a specific goal orientation (Experiment 5). Prediction D: Uncertain self-induced relief—caused by the reflective system—will elicit an avoidance goal orientation (Experiments 6-7). This paper shows why it is legitimate to recognize such explanatory power. To this end, the paper analyzes two central concerns underlying the debate about explanation in phenomenology: (a) the warning against reductionism, which is implicit in a conception of causal explanation exclusively based on models of natural/physical causation; and (b) the warning against top-down generalizations, which neglect the specificity of the individual. While acknowledging that these two caveats express serious concerns regarding the debate on explanatory models, I show that phenomenology has the resources to respond to them. These can be found in analyses of different types of causation relating to different regions of reality and in the structure of explanatory models based on exemplarity. On the basis of these analyses, I defend a pluralist account vis-à-vis explanatory models. Virtual reality (VR)-based treadmill training can increase motivation and improve therapy outcomes. The present study evaluated an immersive virtual reality application (using a head-mounted display, HMD) for gait rehabilitation with patients to (1) demonstrate its feasibility and acceptance and to (2) compare its short-term effects to a semi-immersive presentation (using a monitor) and a conventional treadmill training without VR to assess the usability of both systems and estimate the effects on walking speed and motivation. Methods: In a within-subjects study design, 36 healthy participants and 14 persons with MS or stroke participated in each of the three experimental conditions (VR via HMD, VR via monitor, treadmill training without VR). Results: For both groups, the walking speed in the HMD condition was higher than in treadmill training without VR and in the monitor condition. Healthy participants reported a higher motivation after the HMD condition as compared with the other conditions. Importantly, no side effects in the sense of simulator sickness occurred and usability ratings were high. No increases in heart rate were observed following the VR conditions. Presence ratings were higher for the HMD condition compared with the monitor condition for both user groups. Most of the healthy study participants (89%) and patients (71%) preferred the HMD-based training among the three conditions and most patients could imagine using it more frequently. Conclusions For the first time, the present study evaluated the usability of an immersive VR system for gait rehabilitation in a direct comparison with a semi-immersive system and a conventional training without VR with healthy participants and patients. The study demonstrated the feasibility of combining a treadmill training with immersive VR. Due to its high usability and low side effects, it might be particularly suited for patients to improve training motivation and training outcome e. g. the walking speed compared with treadmill training using no or only semi-immersive VR. Immersive VR systems still require specific technical setup procedures. This should be taken into account for specific clinical use-cases during a cost-benefit assessment. Instruktionale Elemente werden in online verfügbare Lernvideos ausgelagert, welche die Schüler als häusliche Vorbereitung ansehen. Im Unterricht stehen dann schülerzentrierte Tätigkeiten im Vordergrund, in denen die Schüler ihr Wissen anwenden und vertiefen können. Durch die Auslagerung von Inputphasen wandelt sich die Rolle des Lehrers vom Instructor zum Lernbegleiter. Die vorliegende quasi-experimentelle Studie im Pre-/Postdesign mit Kontrollgruppe untersuchte die Wirkungen des Flipped Classroom in Physikkursen der Oberstufe (Grundkursniveau) an zwei deutschen Gymnasien mit N = 151 Schülerinnen und Schülern. Acht Physikkurse der 11. Jahrgangsstufe nahmen an der Studie teil, die sich über einen Zeitraum von zwei Schuljahren erstreckte (2015/16 und 2016/17). Vier der fünf teilnehmenden Lehrkräfte unterrichteten sowohl einen Kontroll- als auch einen Treatmentkurs. Sämtliche Lernvideos wurden von den Lehrkräften selbst erstellt. Dabei integrierten sie reale Experimente, um dem Anspruch physikauthentischen Unterrichts gerecht zu werden. Die Forschungsfragen richteten sich sowohl auf die Leistung in einem Fachwissenstest als auch auf affektive Lernmerkmale wie die Motivation, das Interesse und das Selbstkonzept. Zusätzlich wurden die wahrgenommene Lehrerunterstützung und das Hausaufgabenverhalten untersucht. Die Anwendung von Flipped Classroom im Physikunterricht zeigte größtenteils positive Effekte. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler im Flipped Classroom hatten einen höheren kognitiven Lernzuwachs und ein besseres Selbstkonzept als ihre Mitschüler, die traditionell unterrichtet wurden. Das Leistungsniveau und das Geschlecht der Schülerinnen und Schüler hatten dabei keinen Einfluss auf diese Effekte. Während die Motivation, sich mit Physik zu beschäftigen, in der Kontrollgruppe sank, blieb sie in der Treatmentgruppe auf konstantem Niveau. Bei genauerem Blick zeigte sich, dass die Motivation bei Schülerinnen im Flipped Classroom anstieg, bei Schülerinnen im traditionellen Unterricht jedoch abnahm. Das Interesse am Unterrichtsfach Physik wurde in beiden Gruppen geringer. Sowohl die wahrgenommene Lehrerunterstützung als auch die Hausaufgabendauer blieben in beiden Gruppen zwischen Pre- und Posttest unverändert. Die Hausaufgabendisziplin war im Flipped Classroom jedoch deutlich höher, was zeigt, dass die Schülerinnen und Schüler eher bereit waren, sich instruktionale Lernvideos anzusehen als klassische Hausaufgaben zu bearbeiten. N2 - Flipped Classroom inverts traditional teaching methods by delivering direct instruction in online learning videos. The students watch the videos at home so that class time is freed up for student centered and collaborative activities that allow a deeper exploration of the con-tent. By outsourcing lectures, the role of the teacher shifts from instructing to coaching the students. The quasi-experimental pre/post-study with control group examined the effects of flipped classroom applied to basic physics courses at two German secondary schools with N = 151 students in a three-months-treatment. Eight 11th grade physics courses took part in the study that was conducted in the school years 2015/16 and 2016/17. Four of five teachers in-volved in the study taught both control and treatment courses. All videos were produced by the teachers and incorporated real experiments to ensure an authentic physics education experience. The research questions focused on the performance in a content knowledge test as well as non-cognitive attitudes such as motivation, interest and self-concept. In addition, perceived teacher support and homework habits were also evaluated. Applying flipped classroom in physics school education showed largely positive results. The students in flipped classroom had a higher gain in cognitive learning and a better self-concept than those in a traditional classroom setting. Physics aptitude as well as gender did not moderate these effects. Whereas the motivation to engage in physics declined in the control group, it remained unchanged in the treatment group. In particular, female students in flipped classroom developed a higher motivation to engage in physics than their female peers who lost motivation in the traditional classroom. The interest in physics as a school subject decreased in both groups. The perceived teacher support and the average length of homework stayed the same in both groups between pre- and post-test. However, the homework discipline was considerably higher in flipped classroom which showed that stu-dents were more likely to watch instructional videos than do traditional homework. However, the motivation of severely paralyzed patients, who are potentially in need for BCI, could mainly be internal and thus, an intrinsic motivator may be more powerful. Also healthy subjects who participate in BCI studies could be internally motivated as they may wish to contribute to research and thus extrinsic motivation by monetary reward would be less important than the content of the study. In this respect, motivation could be defined as “motivation-to-help.” The aim of this study was to investigate, whether subjects with high motivation for helping and who are highly empathic would perform better with a BCI controlled by event-related potentials (P300-BCI). We included N = 20 healthy young participants naïve to BCI and grouped them according to their motivation for participating in a BCI study in a low and highly motivated group. Motivation was further manipulated with interesting or boring presentations about BCI and the possibility to help patients. Motivation for helping did neither influence BCI performance nor the P300 amplitude. Post hoc, subjects were re-grouped according to their ability for perspective taking. We found significantly higher P300 amplitudes on parietal electrodes in participants with a low ability for perspective taking and therefore, lower empathy, as compared to participants with higher empathy. The lack of an effect of motivation on BCI performance contradicts previous findings and thus, requires further investigation. We speculate that subjects with higher empathy who are good perspective takers with regards to patients in potential need of BCI, may be more emotionally involved and therefore, less able to allocate attention on the BCI task at hand. For this purpose, 9 studies were conducted that employed direct and indirect measures of attitudes, biological measures of affect as well as measures of real eating behavior and food choice, and compared responses of deprived and non deprived subjects on each of these measures. Spontaneous facial reactions were assessed via EMG and revealed that food deprived subjects showed weaker disgust reactions than satiated participants when being confronted with photographs of disgusting foods. Interestingly, deprived and non deprived subjects evaluated disgusting foods equally negative on a conscious level of information processing, indicating that food deprivation has the potential to attenuate food related disgust irrespective of conscious evaluations. Furthermore, it was found that food deprived participants readily consumed disgust related foods (“genetically modified foods”), while satiated participants rejected those foods. Again, no difference emerged between deprived and non deprived subjects in respect to their conscious evaluations of genetically modified foods (that were negative in both experimental groups). The dissociation between conscious evaluations and actual eating behavior that was observed amongst food deprived participants resembles the dissociation between conscious evaluations and facial reactions, thereby corroborating the assumption that alterations in food related disgust might directly influence eating behavior without changing conscious evaluations of foods. The assumption that a shift in automatic attitudes towards disgusting foods might be responsible for these effects received only partial support. That is, there was only a non significant tendency for food deprived subjects to evaluate disgusting foods more positive than satiated subjects on an automatic level of information processing. Instead, the results of the present thesis suggest that food deprived subjects exhibit a stronger motivation than satiated subjects to approach disgusting foods immediately. More precisely, food deprived participants exhibited strong approach motivational tendencies towards both, palatable and disgusting foods in an “Approach- Avoidance Task” whereas satiated participants only approached palatable (but not disgusting) foods on an automatic level of information processing. Moreover, food deprivation seems to change the subjective weighting of hedonic and functional food attributes in the context of more elaborated decisions about which foods to pick for consumption and which foods to reject. It was found that individual taste preferences were of minor importance for food deprived subjects but very important for satiated subjects when actually choosing between several food alternatives. In contrast, functional food attributes (e.g., immediate availability of a given food, large portion size) were more important selection criteria for food deprived subjects than for satiated subjects. Thus, food deprived participants were less picky than satiated participants, but showed a clear preference for those food alternatives that were functional in ending a state of food deprivation quickly – even if this meant choosing a food that was not considered tasty. Taken together, the present thesis shows that physiological need states (e.g., food deprivation) are tightly linked to the affective and motivational processing of need relevant cues. This link is so strong that food deprivation even modulates affective and motivational reactions as well as eating behavior and choice behavior towards disgusting (but need relevant) foods. N2 - In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde untersucht, wie sich Nahrungsdeprivation auf nahrungsbezogene Ekelreaktionen auswirkt und welche mentalen Prozesse in diesem Zusammenhang eine Rolle spielen. Hierzu wurden in insgesamt 9 Studien unterschiedliche direkte und indirekte Einstellungsmaße, biologische Affektmaße (z.B. EMG), sowie tatsächliches Ess- und Nahrungsauswahlverhalten von hungrigen und satten Probanden analysiert. Anhand elektromyographisch abgeleiteteter, fazialer Reaktionen wurde nachgewiesen, dass hungrige Probanden schwächere unmittelbare Ekelreaktionen als satte Probenden zeigen, während sie mit Fotos von ekelerregenden Speisen konfrontiert werden. Interessanterweise trat dieser Effekt auf, obwohl hungrige Probanden eklige Speisen auf einer bewussten Ebene der Informationsverarbeitung genau so negativ beurteilten wie satte Probanden auch. Dies legt nahe, dass Nahrungsdeprivation auch unabhängig von bewussten Bewertungen zu einer unmittelbaren Abnahme nahrungsbezogener Ekelreaktionen führen kann. Darüber hinaus wurde gefunden, dass satte Probanden den Konsum von ekelassoziierten Speisen („Genfood“) verweigerten, während hungrige Probanden diese in uneingeschränktem Ausmaß konsumierten. Interessanterweise beurteilten hungrige Probanden genetisch veränderte Lebensmittel auf bewusster Ebene jedoch genau so negativ wie satte Probanden auch. Die Hypothese, dass die beobachteten Effekte auf eine Modulation automatischer bzw. „unbewusster“ Einstellungen gegenüber ekligen Speisen zurück zu führen ist, wurde nur bedingt bestätigt. So zeigten hungrige Probanden zwar sowohl gegenüber appetitlichen, als auch gegenüber ekligen Speisen positivere automatische Bewertungen als satte Probanden, dieser Unterschied verfehlte jedoch knapp statistische Signifikanz. Vielmehr legen die gefundenen Ergebnisse nahe, dass hungrige Probanden vor allem stärkere unmittelbare Annäherungsreaktionen an eklige Speisen zeigen als satte Probanden. Letztere differenzierten im Rahmen einer sog. „Annäherungs- Vermeidungsaufgabe“ auch auf einer automatischen Ebene der Informationsverarbeitung deutlich zwischen appetitlicher und ekliger Nahrung, während hungrige Probanden sich gleichermaßen stark an appetitliche und unappetitliche Speisen annäherten. Darüber hinaus zeigte sich, dass hedonische Aspekte (z.B. individuelle Geschmacksvorlieben) unwichtigere Kriterien für die Nahrungsauswahl von hungrigen Probanden waren, als für die Nahrungsauswahl satter Probanden. Funktionale Nahrungsattribute (z.B. Portionsgröße, unmittelbare zeitliche Verfügbarkeit) hingegen waren wichtigere Auswahlkriterien für hungrige Probanden als für satte Probanden. Hungrige Probanden waren somit weniger „wählerisch“ als satte Probanden, sondern zeigten eine Präferenz für jene Nahrungsalternativen, die dazu geeignet waren, einen physiologischen Deprivationszustand schnell zu beenden – selbst wenn es sich dabei um geschmacklich unattraktive Speisen handelte. Insgesamt zeigt die vorliegende Arbeit auf, dass physiologische Deprivationszustände wie Nahrungsdeprivation eng mit der affektiven und motivationalen Verarbeitung von bedürfnisrelevanten Reizen verknüpft sind. Diese Verknüpfung ist so eng, dass Nahrungsdeprivation sogar unmittelbare affektive und motivationale Reaktionen, sowie Konsum.- und Auswahlverhalten gegenüber Speisen beeinflusst, die wir normalerweise als eklig oder unappetitlich erachten.
