T1 - EU-Europe must not fail – bethink yourselves, citizens! N2 - The European Union (EU) is seriously at risk these days. Numerous crisis such as the near-to Grexit last year and the presently looming Brexit, the Euro- and refugees-crisis could lead to a failure of the EU. Furthermore, a growing number of citizens are turning away from the Union and are voting for nationalist or populist parties and their simplistic slogans. This contribution starts with analyzing the alarming crisis shaken background of the EU. It gives evidence to the fact that the EU and its member states have not yet found convincing answers to all of these serious challenges and that the necessary political will and decisiveness, solidarity and loyalty are grievously missing. The paper argues that Europe must not fail because too much is at stake. It appeals to the European nations to remember that solely a united Europe can guarantee inner and outer peace, commonly shared wealth and the capabilities to master the future and enable our continent to survive. Hence, a failure of Europe would mean a dramatic meander and a deadly mistake. With the intention to demonstrate the present dangers very clearly to the European citizens, and in order to shake them up, this contribution changes in its second half into a proclamation. Most of the European nations are addressed directly and questioned with regard to their scandalous indifference and their specific national egoism and arrogance when dealing with the EU. Those EU-citizens find themselves confronted with specifically critical questions who – by their electoral behavior – are strengthening nationalistic forces with their rejection of Europe. The proclamation concludes with a fictitiously optimistic prospect which is labelled as a ‘EU-fairy tale’. The synthesis and isolation of a strained ferrocenophane containing an unsaturated two-boron bridge, isoelectronic with a C=C double bond, was achieved by reduction of a carbene-stabilized 1,1’-bis(dihaloboryl)ferrocene. A combination of spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations was used to assess the influence of the unprecedented strained cis configuration on the optical and electrochemical properties of the carbene-stabilized diborene unit. Initial reactivity studies show that the dibora[2]ferrocenophane is prone to boron-boron double bond cleavage reactions. ER - TY - INPR A1 - Bartfeld, Sina T1 - Modeling infectious diseases and host-microbe interactions in gastrointestinal organoids T2 - Developmental Biology N2 - Advances in stem cell research have allowed the development of 3-dimensional (3D) primary cell cultures termed organoid cultures, as they closely mimic the in vivo organization of different cell lineages. Bridging the gap between 2-dimensional (2D) monotypic cancer cell lines and whole organisms, organoids are now widely applied to model development and disease. Organoids hold immense promise for addressing novel questions in host-microbe interactions, infectious diseases and the resulting inflammatory conditions. Researchers have started to use organoids for modeling infection with pathogens, such as Helicobacter pylori or Salmonella enteritica, gut- microbiota interactions and inflammatory bowel disease. Future studies will broaden the spectrum of microbes used and continue to establish organoids as a standard model for human host-microbial interactions. Moreover, they will increasingly exploit the unique advantages of organoids, for example to address patient-specific responses to microbes. In contrast, cycloaddition reactions of heavier alkene and alkyne analogues, though limited in scope, proceed uncatalyzed. In this work we present the first spontaneous cycloaddition reactions of lighter alkene and alkyne analogues. Selective addition of unactivated alkynes to boron–boron multiple bonds under ambient con- ditions yielded diborocarbon equivalents of simple aromatic hydrocarbons, including the first neutral 6p-aromatic dibora- benzene compound, a 2 p-aromatic triplet biradical 1,3-dibor- ete, and a phosphine-stabilized 2 p-homoaromatic 1,3-dihydro- 1,3-diborete. DFT calculations suggest that all three com- pounds are aromatic and show frontier molecular orbitals matching those of the related aromatic hydrocarbons, C6H6 and C4H42+, and homoaromatic C4H5+.
