Cataglyphis‐Wüstenameisen sind bekannt für ihre Navigationsfähigkeiten, mit deren Hilfe sie nach langen Futtersuchläufen problemlos zum Nest zurückfinden. Wie aber nehmen naive Ameisen ihre Navigationssysteme in Betrieb? Nach mehrwöchigem Innendienst im dunklen Nest werden sie zu Sammlerinnen bei hellem Sonnenschein. Dieser Wechsel erfordert einen drastischen Wandel im Verhalten sowie neuronale Veränderungen im Gehirn. Erfahrene Ameisen orientieren sich vor allem visuell, sie nutzen einen Himmelskompass und Landmarkenpanoramen. Daher absolvieren naive Ameisen stereotype Lernläufe, um ihren Kompass zu kalibrieren und die Nestumgebung kennenzulernen. Während der Lernläufe blicken sie wiederholt zum Nesteingang zurück und prägen sich so ihren Heimweg ein. Zur Ausrichtung ihrer Blicke nutzen sie das Erdmagnetfeld als Kompassreferenz. Cataglyphis‐Ameisen besitzen hierfür einen Magnetkompass, der bislang unbekannt war. N2 - Successful spatial orientation is a daily challenge for many animals. Cataglyphis desert ants are famous for their navi­gational performances. They return to the nest after exten­sive foraging trips without any problems. How do ants take their navigational systems into operation? After conducting different tasks in the dark nest for several weeks, they be­come foragers under bright sun light. This transition re­quires both a drastic switch in behavior and neuronal changes in the brain. Experienced foragers mainly rely on visual cues. They use a celestial compass and landmark panoramas. For that reason, naïve ants perform stereotype learning walks to calibrate their compass systems and ac­quire information about the nest’s surroundings. During their learning walks, the ants frequently look back to the nest entrance to learn the homing direction. For aligning their gazes, they use the earth’s magnetic field as a com­pass reference. This magnetic compass in Cataglyphis ants was previously unknown. Not solely effects of flooding per se, but also related changes in vegetation structure will affect species’ distribution. By elucidating the relationships between species’ occurrence and multivariate habitat conditions on a restricted spatial scale, insight into conservation strategies to preserve riparian species is gained. Ordination and grouping methods revealed important environmental and functional trait constraints on species composition of predatory riparian arthropod assemblages. Mainly flooding disturbance appeared to affect spider and carabid beetle species composition. Habitat affinity and dispersal ability were retained as important traits explaining similarity between arthropod assemblages. River banks similar in species composition differed in absolute and functional group species richness. Furthermore, Poisson regressions demonstrated the importance of variation in discharge regime, sediment composition and vegetation structure for the preservation of rare riparian arthropods. Whereas hygrophilic species benefited from increased vegetation cover, xerothermophilic specialists were favoured by increased flooding disturbance. In contrast to flight-active riparian carabids occurring throughout the river system, especially cursorial spiders are expected to go extinct under increased anthropogenic alterations of discharge regimes. We show the importance of a dynamic and evidence-based approach of river management on a local scale to preserve vulnerable riparian arthropods. In general, river restoration should generate the required heterogeneity in environmental conditions (e.g. dynamic processes) at the river bank level, thereby increasing the sustainability of riverine landscapes. More-over, we argue that the understanding of functional responses towards environmental factors results in general and widely applicable guiding concepts for species conservation. Ein besonders breites Spektrum von Ameisen-Pflanzen-Assoziationen finden wir in der paläotropischen Baumgattung Macaranga (Euphorbiaceae), die sich daher als Modellsystem für vergleichende Untersuchungen hervorragend eignet. Die Grundfrage unserer Untersuchungen an diesem System lautet: Verläuft aufgrund der ausgeprägt mosaikartigen Verteilung der von den myrmekophilen Pflanzen angebotenen Nahrungs- und Nistraumressourcen die Neu- und Wiederbesiedlung von Habitaten durch die Ameisen in Form von Zufallsprozessen? Oder werden, im Gegenteil, durch diesen Umstand Spezialisierungen seitens der Ameisen gefördert und die Zusammensetzung der Lebensgemeinschaften dadurch stärker deterministisch geprägt? Unsere bisherigen Untersuchungen zeigen, daß beide Prinzipien wirken. Bei der alleinigen Nutzung von Nahrungsressourcen fehlen spezialisierte Beziehungen weitgehend und stochastische Ereignisse dürften sehr häufig die Pflanzen-Ameisen-Assoziation bestimmen. Bei den eigentlichen Myrmekophyten hingegen ist die Auswahl der assozierten Ameisen viel stärker determiniert, ganz besonders dann, wenn der Wohnraum, den die Pflanze offeriert, nur durch aktives Öffnen seitens der Ameisen erschlossen werden kann. N2 - Associations of ants with plants can be regarded as one reason for the high abundance and diversity of ants in the tropics. The plants either provide food as extrafloral nectar and/or food bodies or, in the true myrmecophytes, nesting space and partly also food. These associations are characterized by very different forms and intensities of use of the plant resources and, therefore, also varying mutual dependency of the partners. A broad spectrum of different ant-plant associations is found in the paleotropical tree genus Macaranga (Euphorbiaceae) wh ich is therefore especially suited as a model system for a comparative investigation. The central question of our studies is: Does the mosaic character of the spatial distribution of food and nesting resources provided by the myrmecophilous plants rather favour stochastic processes during colonization of habitats by ants? Or does it, on the contrary, preferentially lead to strong specializations in the ants? Our investigations show that both principles are realized. In interactions where ants only use the food resources, specific relationships are lacking and stochastic events direct the associations. In obligate myrmecophytes, however, the colonization largely follows deterministic principles, especially when nesting space inside the plant actively has to be made accessible by the ants. V ASP is stoichiometrically phosphorylated by both cGMP-dependent and cAMPdependent protein kinases in intact human platelets, and its phosphorylation correlates very well with platelet inhibition caused by cGMP- and cAMP-elevating agents. Here we report that in human platelets spread on glass, V ASP is associated predominantly with the distal parts of radial micro filament bundles and with microfilaments outlining the periphery, whereas less V ASP is associated with a central microfilamentous ring. V ASP is also detectable in a variety of different cell types including fibroblasts and epithelial cells. In fibroblasts, V ASP is concentrated at focal contact areas, along microfilament bundles (stress fibres) in a punctate pattern, in the periphery of protruding lamellae, and is phosphorylated by cGMP- and cAMP-dependent protein kinases in response to appropriate stimuli. Evidence for the direct binding of V ASP to F -actin is also presented. The data demonstrate that V ASP is a novel phosphoprotein associated with actin filaments and focal contact areas, i.e. transmembrane junctions between microfilaments and the extracellular matrix. Within only some 30 years human action reduced the area covered with tropical rain forests to about half of its former size, thereby negatively affecting local and global functions of the biosphere and exterminating an unknown number of species. With an exponentially increasing rate we are throwing away our and all future generations' biological heritage. We destroy the most complicated, scientifically most interesting living systems before we have gained any knowledge of their structures ,and dynamics. To understand the particular structures and dynamics of tropical communities means in the first place to understand the causes and consequences of their ten- to more than hundredfold higher alphadiversity (as compared to temperate systems). This problem has a historical dimension and a functional side requiring answers as to the nature of the proximate mechanisms of its maintenance. My review is only concerned with the latter aspect, and its maIn emphasis is on the gaps in our knowledge. Two sets of hypotheses have been developed for explaining the high within-commUnIty diversity. (1) According to the classical concept interspecific niche competition and subsequent niche separation are the main forces determining the structure of the community. These so-called equilibrium models have been contrasted in recent times with (2) non-equilibrium models. These models do not attribute the decisive role to interspecific competition. Strong niche overlaps are presumed to be very common within species-rich communities. Continuous stochastic local disturbances are assumed to prevent the achievement of any long-term equilibrium (climax) state. Being on the right spot at the right time is regarded as most important. Whether oneor a combination of both models provide the best key for understanding the structure of a special section within a community will certainly depend on many properties of the species at debate (mobility, disr.ersal, fertility etc.). For the vast majority of tropical organisms all such information is at present unavailable. The principles governing the structure of communities is just one of the very ,basic open problems. Another very prominent question is how the qualitatively very rich, however quantitatively poor resources are distributed among the members of highly diverse guilds of consumers and decomposers. Does the scarcity rather favour generalists or specialists, are small species overrepresented, are resources more extensively used than in temperate communities? One important property is fairly well established: Populations of most tropical species seem to be very small. Since a) in very many' cases distribution range is obviously very limited, since b) predator pressure is generally assumed to be higher in the tropics and c) recent - perhaps unduely generalized - results claim abundance fluctuations in the tropics fully comparable in their dimensions to those in the temperate zone, the question arises as to how these small populations can persist for seemingly long periods of time and avoid rapid extinction.
