N2 - This first German-language monograph on the Acts of Thomas (ActThom) after decades deals with the central themes of this book, which can be dated to the early third century and localized in the Syrian region. As the demand for an ascetic lifestyle - especially for sexual abstinence - shapes the Acts, questions arise: How does the story realize the demand for asceticism in linguistic terms? Which biblical motives influence the Acts of Thomas? What ideas can be claimed as a further ideological background for these radical demands? Is there a “substitute” for the renunciation that the Thomas Christians have to practice? What role does the dazzling bride's song play in the context (ActThom 6f.)? Do ancient wedding rituals have an influence on the imagery of the Acts that promote so actively the “true wedding” (ActThom 12:10)? The study is based on the established methodological steps of historical-critical exegesis and also integrates newer narratological methods that are useful in a narrative text such as the ActThom. The textual focus is the so-called first deed of the Acts of Thomas which has a paradigmatic character for the entire text. Results of the investigation are for example: a literary-critically based text growth, a christologically based sexual asceticism, especially in the editorial parts of the text, a compensation of the renunciation of physical offspring by "living children" (new converts), a strong interweaving of narrative and speech parts that emphasizes the symbolic-metaphorical character of the Acts of Thomas and a creative adaptation of ancient wedding rites with the aim of inculturating one's own concerns. A Program for a Fresh Perspective N2 - The nucleus of statehood is situated at the local level: in the village, the neighborhood, the city district. This is where a community, beyond the level of the family, first develops collective rules that are intended to ensure its continued existence. But usually this is not the only level of governance at play. Above it, there are supralocal formations of power, varying in scope from regional networks to empires, which supplement the local orders or compete with them. The premise of this Research Unit is that local forms of self-governance are especially heterogeneous and prominent, wherever supralocal statehood exists in the mode of weak permeation. The central question of our approach is how local forms of self-governance work in this context. We will examine the relations to the state level as well as to other local groups as they develop over time; the scope and spatial contingency of forms of self-governance; their legitimization and the interdependency with the organization and collective identity of those groups which carry them out; finally, we will turn our attention to the significance of self-governance for the configuration of weak statehood. The empirical focus will be at the local level, which has so far been largely neglected in the research on governance beyond the state. In order to achieve this, we will work with case studies that are structured by categories and situated in geographical areas and time periods that lie outside of modern Europe with its particular development of statehood since the Late Middle Ages: in Antiquity, and in the Global South of the present. By incorporating these different time frames, we hope to contribute to overcoming the dichotomy between the modern and pre-modern era, which is often given canonical status. Our goal is to create a comparative analysis of different configurations of order as well as the development of a typology of patterns of local governance. The structure of the empirical comparison itself promises methodological insights, since it will entail recognizing, dealing with, and overcoming disciplinary limitations. Starting with the identification of typical patterns and processes, we hope to gain a better grasp of the mechanisms by which local configurations of order succeed, while at the same time advancing the theoretical debate. This will allow us to make an interdisciplinary contribution to the understanding of fundamental elements of statehood and local governance that are of central importance, especially in the context of weak statehood. The insights we hope to gain by adopting this historical perspective will contribute to understanding a present that is not based exclusively on its own, seemingly completely new preconditions, and will thus significantly sharpen the political analysis of various forms of governance. Nevertheless, six passages present acts of worship, which recount worship from different perspectives: Aristeas prays to God and explains his “Greek” idea of worship (Let. Aris. 17), whereas in Let. Aris. 132-140 the high priest explains the Jewish concept of worship. Sacrifices and prayers at the temple in Jerusalem for the Ptolemaic royal house are told in Let. Aris. 45, while at the Ptolemaic court in Alexandria one of the Jewish scholars prays at the beginning of the symposium (Let. Aris. 184-186). Then the daily prayer of the Jewish scholars are recounted in Let. Aris. 305-306 and finally the Ptolemaic king performs a proskynesis before the law at the end of the letter and thereby accepts the translation (Let. Aris. 317). This king is portrayed at the beginning of 3 Maccabees as a successful, positive, Hellenistic ruler, but one whose good rule goes off the rails. This analysis of the ideal of Hellenistic rule (cf. 3 Macc. 3:12-29; 6:24-28; 7:1-9) is then taken to a theological level: the God of Israel is portrayed as the true good king, the Soter who saves his people in their time of greatest trial (6:29, 32; 7:16). By these means the many divine epithets that are a striking feature of 3 Maccabees are incorporated into the narrative (cf. 2:2-3). Thereby 3 Maccabees not only thematises the conflict with a Hellenistic king who exploits his power in diverse ways but also focuses in a concentrated way the notion of a good (Hellenistic) king into the notion of God as king and ruler. Their contribution in a biblical discourse of the topic of universalism of salvation and the problem of theodicy N2 - Die Gottesknechtslieder gehören zu den Texten des Alten Testaments, die sehr häufig interpretiert worden sind. N2 - The Songs of the Servant of the Lord have been interpreted again and again in the past. On the one hand, the continuous interest in these texts can be attributed to the exceptional Christian reception of these songs. On the other hand, the historical and theological significance of Isa 40–55 plays an important role. This study will build on the previous discourse and extend its scope by going beyond a purely literary interpretation of said passages. As one result of the studies of Ulrich Berges, the Songs of the Servant of the Lord are generally no longer considered a self-contained body of texts within the biblical script, mainly because he addresses the main question: What is the role of the texts within the literary context of Second Isaiah? The present study, therefore, investigates how and why the anonymous speaker, who wants to be accepted as a prophet by his audience and inspire the exiled Israelites in Babylon, comes to understand himself to be the Servant of Lord. In the end, however, it is only the prophet himself, who comes to accept his role as such. The interpretation of und reflection on his seeming failure and subsequent death are, consequently, crucial components for a theological discussion of theodicy in the Old Testament. Moreover, one can also find first traces of the anticipation of resurrection and afterlife in the fourth Song of the Servant. Finally yet importantly, the mission of the Servant of the Lord also shows that God’s promise of salvation is no longer limited to Israel, because the Lord’s instructions of bringing the light forward include other nations as well. In sum, this study synthesizes (a) the discussion of central questions relating to the Songs of Servant of the Lord with (b) a thorough examination of the relevance of these texts in the theology of the Old Testament. A discussion of Concepts, Theories and Methods in a Research Group in the Humanities and Social Sciences N2 - Interdisziplinarität markiert ein Forschungsprogramm, das unterschiedliche Konjunkturen erlebt hat. N2 - Interdisciplinarity has experienced cyclical fluctuations. Even though it is currently gaining popularity again, the contours of the notion of interdisciplinarity often remain blurred. For a Research Unit that is adopting an interdisciplinary perspective it is therefore imperative to reach a consensus regarding the underlying concept and its implications. We therefore explain how the interdisciplinary setup and interconnectedness of the DFG Research Unit 2757 contribute to approaching a complex research agenda that lies beyond the scope of individual disciplines. To this end, we first elucidate the fundamental terms, theories and methods, developed and selected through interdisciplinary reflection, and present the basic ideas of our Research Unit. Furthermore, we describe the organizational structure and explain how the subprojects are connected both in terms of content and methodology. This allows us to more precisely define our understanding of interdisciplinary cooperation in the sense of networked research. We are thus aiming at an adequate interdisciplinary approach to our subject matter that allows us to shed light on the fundamental questions from different epistemological perspectives and thereby grasp them more comprehensively than would be possible from a purely disciplinary vantage point. Furthermore, we aspire to broaden and deepen our methodology by implementing and combining different subject-specific approaches. We thereby aim to achieve innovative results regarding theoretical and methodological aspects. Concepts of "God" in the letter of Aristeas T2 - Die Septuaginta - Orte und Intentionen N2 - The “Letter of Aristeas” recounts the translations of the Hebrew Bible into Greek. Probably originating in the 2nd century BCE1, the book tells a legend of how the translation of the Torah into Greek came into being. This shows that translating a holy, canonical text or the first time needed explication. Notably, the translation of the godly nomos (Arist 3) comparatively takes up little space (Arist 301–307). And it has to be noted, that “God” is seldom a topic in the Book of Aristeas. The word (ὁ) θεός “God” is found in only three contexts: in the dialogue between king Ptolemaios and Aristeas (Arist 15–21), in the dialogue of the high priest Eleazar and Aristeas (Arist 121–171; above all 128; 130–141; 155–166; 168) and in the question-and-answer-speech during the symposium at the Ptolemaic royal court between the king and the Jewish scholars (Arist 184–294). In analysing the different statements regarding God, the frame of the narrative is of decisive importance: In the Book of Aristeas, “Aristeas” (Ἀριστέας), who writes in Greek, presents himself as the author, but he is also part of the story. Accordingly, Aristeas is the narrator, who tells the story from his own point of view, and at the same time, he is a character in the ‘world’ of the text. This Aristeas presents himself as a Greek and a Non-Jew (Arist 16; 121–171), who already wrote a book (Arist 6) and plans further publications (Arist 322). In the double-role as narrator of the text and protagonist in the text, Aristeas has to be differentiated from the (real) writer/author of the Book of Aristeas, who possibly was Jewish. That means that the (real, probably Jewish) author of the Book of Aristeas presents (or invents) “Aristeas” and gives him the role of the narrator of his text.3 The author portrays Aristeas as a Greek, non-Jewish character, who is a servant of the royal court. This differentiation between narrator and writer/author is of crucial importance for the question of the different conceptions of God in the Book of Aristeas. An Analysis of the Emotions in the killing scene (Jdt 12:10-13:9) T2 - Ancient Jewish Prayers and Emotions N2 - Starting with a terminological and phenomenological perspective on the question “What is an emotion?”, particularly as developed by Aaron Ben Zeʾev , the kiling scene in the book of Judith (Jdt 12:10–13:9 is analysed. This crucial scene in the book’s plot reports the intense emotions of Holofernes but nothing is said about any emotions on the part of of Judith. The only emotional glimpse occurs in Judith’s short prayers in the killing scene. The highly emotional Holofernes and the unemotional Judith together reveal that Holofernes is already made “headless” by his own emotions, whereas the unemotional Judith, unencumbered by emotions, is able to behead the “headless” Holofernes. Hilt), Lydia T1 - Dominus contulit splendorem (Idt 10,4) : das Motiv der Schönheit im Buch Iudith N2 - The use of the motif of beauty in the Vulgate on the one hand and in LXX/HS 151 on the other hand reveals a conspicuous difference. While Judith just makes herself beautiful (Jdt 10,2-4 LXX/ Hs 151) and her original God-given beauty is a precondition (Jdt 8,7), in the Vulgate it is God who gives her beauty. So beauty is not an inherent part of Iudith's characterization anymore, to be seen in line with integrity and blessing by God as it was the case for the LXX and Hs 151. In the Vulgate beauty loses its significance, because Iudith is only given beauty in order to awake the hostile general Holofernis' desire, so that he will fall. While Holofernis is going to succumb to his evil desire, Iudith sets herself morally apart because of the contrary, her chastity, and because of that she is not initially characterized as beautiful, but as decent (elegans, Jdt 8,7). In Idt 10,4 virtue rather than desire is assigned to her. Because of her chaste way of life God predestines Iudith for the salvation, and this is what he makes her beautiful for. Therefore chastity is a central and specific virtue in the Iudith story in Vg. Iudith represents everything that Jerome describes as a Godfearing life, and therefore she is rewarded by God. Tue variants in Idt 8,7 and Idt 10,4 in comparison to the other text versions show St. Jerome's typical profile of the Iudith story and aim at this message. The events surrounding his death and resurrection as well as the new situations his followers were confronted with after these events, led to the parables being given new accentuation according to the needs of the reflecting community. This is evident in Matthew's treatment of the parable trilogy of Mt 21:28-22:14. The work tries to show how Matthew has used the dominical parables and sayings found in his tradition to serve the needs of his community, especially in her struggles with the official Jewish leaders of his time. Through these parables, which he presented as a three-pronged attack against the Jewish leaders, he shows his community as the true Israel, called to produce the fruits of righteousness. Becuase of this aim, he seems to overlook the wrongdoings of the Powerful in his time inorder not to endanger the peace of Christianity. However, the intention of this work is to show the defiance and fearlessness of Luke in his dealings with the Rich and the Powerful. He never compromised with the basic teachings of Christianity. A second proper look opens the critical dynamics of his Gospel and the acts, beginning with the Magnificat running through the angelic annunciation scene and the temptation and ending with the punishment of Herod Agrippa in the Acts. The reader beholds a hitherto unknown Luke, who operates within a particular critical stance to the Powerful. N2 - The thesis is treating the question of the widows in the double opus of Luke on the background of the social situation of the widows in the Hellenistic-Roman society of antiquity. After a review about the status of research the author analysis the historic situation of the widows in antiquity. Then he analysis the single pericops in the Gospel (Lc 2,36-38; 4,25f; 7,11-17; 18,1-8; 20,45-47; 21,1-4) and the Acts (6,1-7; 9,36-43), first the single pericops and then in a narrative review. Thereby the message of Luce to his communities on the background of the social situation every time is elaborated. At the end the complete message of Luce on the question of widows for his communities in the Hellenistic-Roman society is recapitulated. Nominating often the widows the new testament author Luke wants to indicate the need of this social group which frequently is living in a precarious situation and which doesn’t find particular attention in the social environment of the Hellenistic-Roman world, especially if these widows are poor. On the contrary the biblical tradition knows a special care for the widows. Luce wants to sensibilize his communities for this biblical-jewish tradition, also because in the christian environment it was noticed that this care and sensibility had not been introduced automatically (Acts 6,1-7). In this regard through the pericopes he guides the attention of the christians in his communities on the problems and chances of the live of the widows. The multifaceted image of the prophet in the composition of 1 Kings 17-18 : A textual analysis N2 - Die Texte des Elijazyklus (1 Kön 17 - 2 Kön 2*) haben im Rahmen der Monotheismusdebatte besondere Aktualität erlangt und neue Fragestellungen hervorgerufen. N2 - The texts of the Elija cycle (1 Kings 17 to 2 Kings 2*) have become especially topical in recent discussions of monotheism; this has resulted in novel theological aims and objectives. But it is impossible to respond to such farreaching historical and religious questions concerning the Old Testament without a meticulous analysis of the Old Testament texts themselves. The aim of the present thesis is therefore to provide this indispensable basis, by an analysis of the incipient Elija cycle, i.e. 1 Kings 17 und 18, texts which have always presented great difficulties to exegesis, and involved much controversial debate. Such queries have concentrated on the the literary problems of this sequence: The question is therefore whether the individual strands of tradition can still be discerned. Can these strands be reconstructed, or have they been irretrievably buried in the obscure prehistory of the text? These queries of recent exegetical history constitute the starting point for the present thesis, also denoting its background in the framework of current research. In a diachronic approach, as a first analytical step, the present study intends to bring out the original shapes of the texts, and evaluate them in a linguistic analysis, concentrating on the layer structure of the individual texts.Three areas of composition are shown to be discernable, which encompass seven textual units and constitute potential principles of organization on which the eventual editor may have based himself to unify the present Old Testament text. The study focusses, however, on the second analytical step, namely the critical evaluation of the literary form proper. The present study follows the classical four grammatical levels distinguished by WOLFGANG RICHTER, pursuing analyses on the level of the word, on the level of the phrase, on the level of the clause viz. the sentence, and on the level of the text. It is in this area that the literary verdict is examined in terms of formal analysis; focal points and detailed aims of the investigation being determined strictly according to the linguistic diagnosis here attained. An additional overall result of the study is the multifaceted image of the prophet, rich in contrasts, as it emerges from the sequence of 1 Kings17-18. Untersuchungen zur Apostelgeschichte T1 - Democracy in the People of God? N2 - Under the question, how the early christian church dealt with power, relevant passages from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts) are exegetically analysed in this thesis: the transfer of power within the election of the Hellenistic Seven (Act 6:1-7); the empowering commission of Barnabas and Saul by the Antiochian christian community (Act 13:1-3); the common practising of power in the Jerusalem assembly (Act 15:1-41); finally the last will of Paul, given in his farewell address at Milet (Act 20:17-38). In doing so, synchronous methods (following the narrative analysing-methods of G. Genette and S. Rimmon-Kenan) and the classic instruments of the historical criticism complete one another. Some Sideglances are able to point out the analogies - especially emphasized by Luke - between the life of the early christian communities and other organisations in their contemporary environment (e.g. associations or the Jewish synagogue). Following the theory of power, given by H. Arendt, the results from the analysis of Acts are interpreted as a testimony for the consciousness of the common power of all members in the people of God, which is expressed in democratical forms of organizing. Based upon the fundamental rights of all christians - freedom, equality an brotherhood -, as the New Testament proofs them, basics for a democratic reform of the catholic church are finally presented.
