N2 - A new distribution area with numerous growth sites of Trifolium micranthum has been discovered at the sea dikes of the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany between the estuary of river Elbe and the island of Nordstrand with main occurrence on the peninsula Eiderstedt. Geographically this area links the Dutch population with the West Baltic population in Denmark and is the only semi natural growth site of this tiny clover in Germany. The other current growth sites in Germany are located on cemeteries in Nordrhein-Westfalen. T. micranthum prefers the steep inner slopes of sea dikes (30% gradient) with their higher diversity of vegetation and open ground sites created by grazing and tracks of sheep. Grazing creates significant reduction of the size of various parts of the clover (miniaturization). The paper also provides morphometric data on distinguishing features that are controversially treated in the literature, e.g. the length of pedicels with 0.6–1.1 mm (mean 0.8 mm), flower size (corolla with calyx) below 3 mm (mean 2.4 mm) and number of flowers per inflorescence of (1)2–6(8). A drawing of T. micranthum is provided that may help to discover new growth sites. N2 - Rubus viridilucidus Drenckhahn is a new member of the Rubus section Corylifolii, series Subcanescentes, with an average tetraploid set of chromosomes (2n=28) and a genome size of 1.49 pg that matches the genome size of the related species of the series Subcanescentes R. scabrosus, R. fasciculatiformis and R. fasciculatus (1.52–1.54 pg). This species is distinguished by 3 to 4(5)-nate leaves with down curved roundish to broad obovate terminal and broad lateral leaflets with lucid-green glabrous upper side and light greenish grey, velvety pubescent lower side. Stems are roundish to obtusely angled, glabrous, green to reddish coloured, and armed sparsely with short, needle-like prickles (<4mm) and stalked glands. R. viridilucidus develops a second type of stem – denoted as panicle shoot – that is 0.8–1.6 m long, emerges directly from the rootstock and terminates apically in an inflorescence. Panicle shoots occur in R. viridilucidus in two varieties. The species prefers fallow land, quarries, road sides and margins of vineyards. It has a remarkable capability of propagation (about 1–2 m/year) as documented on the basis of satellite image (Google Earth) in combination with on-site surveys. This new species is distinguished by 4 (3–5)-nate leaves with obovate acuminate to cuspidate terminal leaflets with short-haired upper side and light greenish tangibly hairy under side. Stems grow arcuate, partly climbing, are obtusely angled, moderately hairy, green to reddish brown coloured, and armed with 10–20 straight, slender prickles, 2–4 (5) mm long, numerous pricklets, stalked glands and bristlets. Pedicels of inflorescence are armed with 2–8 (per cm) slender straight to slightly curved prickles (1–2 mm long) and studded with numerous stalked glands (up to 0.6 mm long) and some bristles. The species prefers road sides and hedgerows. The distribution area of R. pseudoglotta, known so far, extends from the area between Rendsburg and the surroundings of the city of Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein and reaches north to the Danish islands of Als and Fyn. N2 - The distribution area of the Atlantic wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. subsp. oleracea), hitherto known to be restricted to atlantic coastal cliffs between Northern Spain, Scotland and Helgoland, has expanded this century eastwards to the limestone cliffs of the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea. The population size is about 50 individuals which are morphologically indistinguishable from Atlantic wild cabbage. The possibility is addressed whether the Rügen population might be derived by backcrossing and naturalization of escaped cultured Brassica oleracea varieties. Genetic studies have shown that the main cultured varieties grown today are closely related to Atlantic wild cabbage from which these varieties were most likely raised. Spontaneous reversal from cultured varieties to the atlantic wild phenotype has often been claimed but not been convincingly demonstrated in the literature and it is considered unlikely that such a full reversal would occur in the absence of crosspollination (introgression) with wild type cabbages. However, introgression of cultured varieties with wild types or naturalization of escaped cultured cole varieties to a more archaic phenotype has been reported. Such an introgression or naturalization process is currently taking place at the limestone coast of Zealand/Denmark. As documented and described in this study, the wild growing coles of Zealand look like descendents of kale and (headed) cabbage and differ considerably from the population of Rügen and Helgoland. The currently observed eastward extension of the atlantic range of wild Brassica oleracea into the Baltic Sea can be interpreted as a more general phenomenon of eastward expansion of the distribution area of other atlantic species in the course of climate warming. N2 - Climate change is expected by the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC 2021) to cause a rise in the sea level of up to 63-101 cm by 2100. The general plan for coastal protection in Schleswig-Holstein (GKSH) is to increase in the height of most of the North Sea-dikes and dikes of River Elbe (together 363.3 km with a vegetation cover of ca. 3,500 ha). These actions will be accompanied by a complete loss of old dike vegetation and will result in the release of large amounts of CO₂ from soil carbon. The sea dikes of the North Sea coast (262 km) are covered by a diverse semi-natural grassland (area of 2,600 ha) grazed by sheep and comprising up to 18 grass species, 64 dicotyledonous flowering plant species and 800-1000 invertebrate species (among them 200 beetle species). Plants of the salt marsh communities invade the vegetation on the lower outer slopes. The steeper, warmer, drier and wind-protected inner slopes of the sea dikes (oriented mainly to the East and South) contain frequent ground injuries (by sheep claws) and are preferentially settled by thermophilic and less competitive species such as the following Mediterranean-Subatlantic plants: Knotted hedgeparsley (Torilis nodosa), the rare Slender trefoil (Trifolium micranthum) and Bird's-foot clover (Trifolium ornithopodioides) (only natural sites in Germany, red list categories 1 and 2). Schleswig-Holstein has a great responsibility for the survival of these clover species at their continental North-Western boundary (the current distribution is documented). The following measures are proposed to protect the rich dike vegetation and parts of their invertebrate fauna during dike strengthening within the GKSH: 1. lifting of the turf with root space and re-laying of the old turf (sods) on the new dike profile which is also important for protection of soil carbon storage (climate protection). 2. Seeding of new dike profiles with seeds from species-rich dike sections. 3. Inclusion of substantial research programs/funding on the ecology of sea dikes. Furthermore, the use of herbicides on dikes to control thistles should be avoided. N2 - Ficaria calthifolia (typical diploid form, type1) has recently been discovered to grow outside its southeastern European distribution area also in Germany, namely in Northern Bavaria (Würzburg) and at dikes of the river Elbe in Brandenburg and Saxony. Ficaria calthifolia is distinguished from Ficaria verna by the absence of both elongated multisegmental stems and axillary tubers (bulbils). The 1–2 (3) short stems of Ficaria calthifolia remain mostly underground and may extend during anthesis few cm above ground. Leaves form a rosette-like cluster consisting of ground leaves (directly arising from the rhizome) and a rosette of up to 8 stem-leaves that emanate from the single (terminal) node of the short stems. The majority of flower stalks are leafless (true pedicles) but about 40% contain a single, a pair or rarely a triplet of petiolate leaves. The number of petals is 8 (9). Diploid Ficaria calthifolia is fertile with average 7 (Würzburg) to 14 nutlets (Elbe population) per head (maximum 26). In Würzburg also triploid plants (type2) were encountered being more robust than diploid plants with larger flowers, larger blades and largely abortive nutlets. A small population of plants (type3) with higher numbers of chromosomes (probably pentaploid) was also found. Plants intermediate between Ficaria calthifolia and Ficaria verna are readily distinguished by axillary tubers at stem leaves. Tubers removed from rhizome of Ficaria calthifolia and planted in soil in May gave rise to new plants sprouting in late autumn. Annual cycle of the root system is described. Spontaneous shedding of tubers from rhizome appears to be a regular mechanism of vegetative proliferation of Ficaria calthifolia. Thus, accidental displacement not only of nutlets but also of tubers via rivers (i.e. river Elbe) or by other (anthropogenic) vectors could be sufficient for north-westward expansion of the distribution area. Due to its particular geographic position at the border between scandinavian, middle european and continental european floral elements, Rügen harbours several hawkweed species (Hieracia) of the scandinavian area such as Hieracium fuscocinererum, H. subramosum, H. subrigidum and H. diaphanoides subsp. neoornatum and, at the same time, is the most northwestern location of H. echioides. Two endemic Hieracium species have been identified recently, i. e. H. muorum subsp. rugianum and H. caesium subsp. zabelianum (Gottschlich et al. 1998, Bot. Rundbr. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 31:1-94). In the present communication, two further novel endemic Hieracium taxa will be described, which are restricted to the chalk cliffs of Cape Arkona and Jasmund, i. e. H. swantevitii and H. lachenalii subsp. litocretaceum. H. swantevitii (Swantevit’s hawkweed) is intermediate between H. caesium/H. bifidum and H. lachenalii with hairy, modestly glandular involucre and slightly serrated elongated leaves . This view of an intermediate position of H. swantevitii between these species was further supported by the ultrastructure of epidermal papillae of the outer bracts of the involucre visualized by scanning electron microscopy. H. lachenalii subsp. litocretaceum (chalk cliff hawkweed) is characterized by its narrow anguste to almost linear denticulate leaves in combination with mode rately glandular heads. In addition to the description of these two new hawkweed taxa , the rediscovery of three further species will be reported for Rügen, i. e. H. echioides (W. Gager in SE Rügen), H. cymosum subsp. cymosum (close to Göhren in SE Rügen) and H. subrigidum E Glowe in N Rügen. The locality of H. echioides appears to be most north-western site in middle Europe, the locality of H. cymosum is one of the last growth sites in the northern German lowlands and H. subrigidum (so far only known as a single herbarium specimen, collected 1858 in Rügen) has so far not been recorded in other localities of middle Europe.
