Transported downslope, clasts allowed in some areas the formation of stratified slope deposits known as “grèzes litées”. This study reviews the existing theories and investigates the grèzes litées deposits of Enscherange and Rodershausen in Luxembourg. This process was reinforced by the lithostructural control of the parent material expressed by the dip of schistosity (66°) and its orientation parallel to the main slopes in the area. This gave opportunities to activate the frost-weathering process on top of the ridge where the parent material outcropped. As the stratified slope deposits have a dip of 23° and as there is no significant lateral variation in rock fragment size, slope processes that involve only gravity are excluded and transportation in solifluction lobes with significant slopewash and sorting processes is hypothesized. The Enscherange formation, the biggest known outcrop of grèzes litées in north-western Europe, shows evidence of clear layering over the whole profile depth. A palaeolandscape reconstruction shows that ridges must have been tens of metres higher than presently. The investigation of the matrix composition shows Laacher See tephra in the overlying periglacial cover bed with infiltrations of the minerals in the reworked upper layer of the grèzes litées deposit. Chronostratigraphic approaches using the underlying cryoturbation zone and Laacher See heavy minerals in the overlying topsoil place the formation of grèzes litées deposits in the Late Pleistocene. Such explosions can occur in different scenarios: in steel or powerplants but also in volcanoes. Because of the possible dramatic consequences of such explosions an investigation of the explosion process is necessary. Fundamental basics of this process are already discovered and explained, such as the frame conditions for these explosions. It has been shown that energy transfer during an MFCI-process can be very high because of the transfer of thermal energy caused by positive feedback mechanisms. Up to now the influence of several varying parameters on the energy transfer and the explosions is not yet investigated sufficiently. An important parameter is the melt temperature, because the amount of possibly transferable energy depends on it. The investigation of this influence is the main aim of this work. Therefor metallic tin melt was used, because of its nearly constant thermal material properties in a wide temperature range. With tin melt research in the temperature range from 400 °C up to 1000 °C are possible. One important result is the lower temperature limit for vapor film stability in the experiments. For low melt temperatures up to about 600 °C the vapor film is so unstable that it already can collapse before the mechanical trigger. As expected the transferred thermal energy all in all increases with higher temperatures. Although this effect sometimes is superposed by other influences such as the premix of melt and water, the result is confirmed after a consequent filtering of the remaining influences. This trend is not only recognizable in the amount of transferred energy, but also in the fragmentation of melt or the vaporizing water. But also the other influences on MFCI-explosions showed interesting results in the frame of this work. To perform the experiments the installation and preparation of the experimental Setup in the laboratory were necessary. In order to compare the results to volcanism and to get a better investigation of the brittle fragmentation of melt additional runs with magmatic melt were made. In the results the thermal power during energy transfer could be estimated. Furthermore the model of “cooling fragments “ could be usefully applied. N2 - The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is the world’s most elevated highland which was built over the past 50 million years. With its extent, the TP did not only influence the climate in Asia, but also caused global changes. Today, the TP represents a climate change hot spot and is, as the source region of many large rivers in Asia, crucial for the water supply of billions of people. Considering this background, it is important to obtain a better understanding of the processes that control the climate in the region and to estimate the climate variability on different time scales. The basic goal of this study is to provide spatial highly resolved quantitative information about the changes in the climatic conditions in Asia during the uplift of the TP and during periods with warmer and colder boundary conditions and thus to put these different timescales in relation. Therefore, the modern climate and the paleoclimate of the region are being simulated with climate models. The global climate model ECHAM5 is dynamically downscaled with the regional climate model REMO, because previous studies have shown, that the results of models with higher resolution are more consistent with paleoclimate reconstructions than the results of models with lower resolution. The uplift of the TP is approximated by a series of five simulations (topography experiments) in which the elevation of the TP is varied in steps of 25% from 0% to 100% of its present day height. The late Quaternary climate variations are represented by two simulations with boundary conditions for the Mid-Holocene and the Last-Glacial-Maximum (Quaternary experiments). For the Quaternary experiments, the greenhouse gas concentration, orbital parameters, land cover and some vegetation parameters have been adopted for the particular time slice. The evaluation of the simulations’ results focusses on annual and seasonal changes of the near surface temperature and precipitation. Variations in the strength of the Indian monsoon are analyzed by means of different monsoon indices. In order to identify and characterize the regional climate types there, a cluster analysis is conducted for the TP and adjacent regions. The topography experiments show that the annual mean 2m-temperature drops by up to 30◦C in the region of the TP when the height of the plateau is reduced while it becomes colder nearly everywhere else in the model domain. The annual precipitation amount is reduced in the west and north of the TP when its height is reduced. The immense precipitation increase to the north of the TP can be explained by the formation of a trough instead of a ridge in the mid-troposphere of this region. The general spatial pattern of the changes already persists when the height of the TP is reduced to 75% of the present day value and it does not change fundamentally when the height is reduced further. This pertains for the 2m-temperature, the precipitation and for the annual as well as the seasonal means. The analysis of the intensity of the Indian Summer Monsoon shows that the strongest intensification appears between 25% to 75% of the TP’s present day elevation. Half of the current elevation is necessary to get a monsoon intensity comparable to the one of today. In the Mid-Holocene, it is on average colder and more humid in most parts of the model domain compared to present day. But the differences are mostly small and not significant. Concerning the temperature, the model data coincides only sporadically with reconstructed values. However, the reconstructions show great spatial variability, which reflects the uncertainties that are present in this data set. Regarding precipitation, the simulated data matches the reconstructions better. Both the simulated and the reconstructed data point towards wetter conditions. Compared to present day values, the simulation of the Last-Glacial-Maximum shows up to 8◦C lower annual and seasonal mean temperatures everywhere in the model domain compared to present day values. The results are in good conformity with reconstructed temperature values for this time slice. A significant reduction of the annual precipitation amount appears in the west and north of the TP, in India, Southeast Asia and along the east coast of China. Where precipitation reconstructions are available, the model results show good accordance with these values. A significant increase in precipitation appears only between the northern coast of the Bay of Bengal and the Himalayas, but this potentially represents a model artifact. There are big differences between the indices in terms of the monsoon intensity. The Extended Indian Monsoon Rainfall Index shows a strong reduction of the Indian Summer Monsoon, whereas the value of the Webster and Yang Monsoon Index remains nearly unchanged compared to the present day value. A comparison of the monsoon intensity in the topography and the quaternary experiments reveals that the change in boundary conditions between warm and cold intervals affects the Indian monsoon at least as much as the uplift of the TP. N2 - This thesis presents detailed stratigraphical and paleopedological studies of loess-paleosol sequences (LPS) in the continental northeast of Austria, on the leeward side of the Bohemian Massif relative to the Westerlies. Aside from advances in methodology, general conclusions are drawn about climate and landscape development over the last million years. The studied outcrops are located in the region of Krems (Krems-Schießstätte, Paudorf, Stiefern) and at Stillfried. Some are widely known as former type localities of Quaternary stratigraphy, but general interest in these records faded after fundamental revisions were made in the 1970s. The LPS are located at slope positions, where polygenetic units and erosional discontinuities are common. The records document a complex geomorphological development, thus the application of established paleoclimatic proxies is not promising. In order to understand the genesis of the studied LPS, a multi-method approach was developed that encompassed detailed investigations on various scales from the landscape to the microscope. One key innovation is the use of quantitative color measurements in high resolution to provide a standardized classification of profile units. Detailed micromorphological analyses were the main basis for reconstructing the interplay of aeolian sedimentation, pedogenesis, and slope processes. Based on various geochronological tie points, stratigraphies of the investigated LPS were correlated; evidence for several profound geomorphic changes in the Krems region during the Pleistocence. The concept of climaphytomorphic soils combined with the chronological framework allowed for qualitative paleoclimatic conclusions: Strongly weathered soil horizons are polygenetic and do not indicate enhanced humidity during distinct phases of development. The continentality of the study region during warm periods has remained relatively constant during the last million years, partly with enhanced Mediterranean influences. A dominating influence of Atlantic moisture remained restricted to the regions west of the Bohemian Massif. The paleoclimates in the study region were to some extent comparable to the Pannonian Basin; though, the studied records do not indicate a considerable gradient of increasing aridity during the Middle Pleistocene. Interesting are numerous bleached horizons in the loess sediments, interpreted as remnants of tundra gley soils. As these are practically absent in the loess of the Pannonian Basin, a rather Central European character of the main cold stages in the studied time frame could be inferred. The decisive processes of Upper Miocene and Pliocene landform differentiation were continuing planationsurface lowering increasingly governed by the structural differentiation of the bedrock substrate and local expansion of planation surfaces. This formation led to valley cutting since the Pliocene/Pleistocene transition period in the course of progressive reduction of the areas still subject to planation. The extent of structural adaptation and the interpretation of correlative sediments confirm a differentiated course of Late Tertiary climatic change, which, within the overall trend towards lower temperatures since the Lower to Middle Miocene, expressed itself in increasingly dry conditions during the Late Upper Miocene and Pliocene (BOLDT 1997). Taking the Lower Franconian scarplands (Main River region of southern Germany) as an example, the compatibility of the formation of stepped planation surfaces with the structural forcing of landform development is explained and confirmed in a world-wide comparison for regions of sedimentary rocks of varying resistance. The differentiated morphological context based on climate and geology is pointed out (BOLDT 1998). Institutions and organizations like the World Food Programme (WFP) and FEWS NET put the events on the agenda and released alerts and requested help. The partly controversial picture was that most of the Sahel faced a crisis caused by widespread floodings. Our study shows that the rainy season in 2007 was exceptional with regard to rainfall amount and return periods. In many areas the event had a return period between 1 and 50 yr with high spatial heterogeneity, with the exception of the Upper Volta basin, which yielded return periods of up to 1200 yr. Despite the strong rainfall, the interpretation of satellite images show that the floods were mainly confined to lakes and river beds. However, the study also proves the difficulties in assessing the meteorological processes and the demarcation of flooded areas in satellite images without ground truthing. These facts and the somewhat vague and controversial reports in the media and FEWS NET demonstrate that it is crucial to thoroughly analyze such events at a regional and local scale involving the local population. Initial research has shown that the sediments found are suitable for reconstructing its late quaternary palaeoenvironment. Although a high number of investigations focused on the succession of climatological conditions in the Central Sahara, some uncertainties still exist as the results show discontinuities and mostly are of low temporal and spatial resolution. Two expeditions in 2005 and 2006 headed to the northeastern parts of Niger to investigate the known remains of palaeolakes and search some new and undetected ones. Samples were taken at several study sites in order to receive a complete picture of the Late Quaternary environmental settings and to produce high-resolution proxies for palaeoclimate modelling. The most valuable and best-investigated study site is the sebkha of Seggedim, where a core of 15 meters length could be extracted which revealed a composition of high-resolution sections. Stratigraphical, structural and geochemical investigations as well as the analysis of thin sections allow the characterization of different environmental conditions from Early to Mid Holocene. Driven by climate and hydrogeological influence, the water body developed from a water pond of several metres depth within a stable, grass and shrub vegetated landscape, to an alternating freshwater lake in a more dynamic environmental setting. Radiocarbon dates set the beginning of the stage at about 10.6 ka cal BP, with an exceptionally stable regime to 6.6 ka cal BP (at 12.6 metres’ depth), when a major change in the sedimentation regime of the basin is recorded in the core. Increased erosion, likely due to decreased vegetation cover within the basin, led to the siltation/filling of the lake within a few hundred years and the subsequent development of a sebkha/salt pan due to massive evaporation. Due to the lack of dateable material in the upper core section, the termination of the lake stage and the onset of the subsequent sebkha stage cannot be determined precisely but can be narrowed to a period around 6 ka BP. The results obtained from the core are compared with those from terrestrial and lacustrine sediments from outside the depression, situated a few hundred kilometres further to the north. These supplementary study sites are required to validate the information obtained from the coring. Within the plateau landscape of Djado, Mangueni and Tchigai, two depressions and a valley containing lacustrine deposits, were investigated for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Depending on modifying local factors, these sediment archives were of shorter existence than IX the lake, but reveal additional information about the landscape dynamics from Early to Mid Holocene. A damming situation within a small tributary at Enneri Achelouma led to lacustrine sedimentation conditions at Early Holocene in the upper reaches of the valley. The remnants of the lacustrine accumulations show distinct changes in the environmental conditions within the small catchment, as the archive immediately responded to local climate-induced changes of precipitation. Radiocarbon dating of the deposited sediments revealed ages from 8780 ± 260 cal a BP to 9480 ± 80 cal a BP. The sites of Yoo Ango and Fabérgé show a completely different sedimentation milieu as they consist of basins within the foothills of the Tchigai. The study sites show increased catchment sizes, probably extending towards the Tchigai massif and are most likely influenced by groundwater charge. The widespread occurrence of wind shaped relicts and the limited amount of lacustrine remnants indicate a generally high aeolian activity in both areas. Only in wind sheltered spots, parts of the lacustrine sequences were preserved, that show ages spanning from Early to Mid Holocene (9440 ± 140 cal a BP – 6810 ±140 cal a BP) and give additional evidence of fires from pre-LGM periods. Although intensively weathered, all profiles indicate distinct changes in the sedimentation conditions by alternating geochemical values and the mineralogical composition. The information obtained from the records investigated in this work confirms the heterogeneity of reconstructed environmental succession in the Central Sahara. The Mid Holocene rapid (within decades) and uniform development from more humid to extremely arid environmental conditions cannot be confirmed for the Central Sahara. In addition, a division of Early and Mid Holocene wet periods cannot be confirmed, either. Actually, the evidences obtained from the palaeoenvironmental reconstructions revealed major variations in the timing and extend of lacustrine and aeolian periods. Evidently, a transitional time has existed between 7 to 5 ka BP where alternating influences prevailed. This is indicated by the varying sedimentation conditions in the Seggedim depression as well as the evidence of soil properties on a fossil dune, with a time of deposition dated to 6200 ± 400 cal a BP and the removal of lacustrine Sediments at the Seeterrassental at Mid Holocene. In respect to provide a complete picture of landscape succession and to avoid misinterpretation, the investigation of several dissimilar spots within a designated study area is prerequisite for further investigations. The BC techniques are the multivariate quantile delta mapping (MQDM) where the grids are used as variables to incorporate the spatial dependency structure of precipitation in the bias correction; empirical quantile mapping (EQM) and, the linear scaling (LS) approach. Several metrics that include first to fourth moments and extremes characterized by the frequency of heavy wet days and return periods during boreal summer were applied to score the performance of the BC techniques. Our results indicate a strong dependency of the relative performances of the BC techniques on the choice of the regional climate model (RCM), the region, the season, and the metrics of interest. Hence, each BC technique has relative strengths and weaknesses. The LS approach performs well in adjusting the first moment but tends to fall short for higher moments and extreme precipitation during boreal summer. Depending on the season, the region and the RCM considered, there is a trade-off between the relative performances of the EQM and the MQDM in adjusting the simulated precipitation biases. However, the MQDM performs well across all considered metrics. Overall, the MQDM outperforms the EQM in improving the higher moments and in capturing the observed return level of extreme summer precipitation, averaged over Germany. T1 - Soil and water conservation in Burkina Faso, West Africa JF - Sustainability N2 - Inadequate land management and agricultural activities have largely resulted in land degradation in Burkina Faso. The nationwide governmental and institutional driven implementation and adoption of soil and water conservation measures (SWCM) since the early 1960s, however, is expected to successively slow down the degradation process and to increase the agricultural output. Even though relevant measures have been taken, only a few studies have been conducted to quantify their effect, for instance, on soil erosion and environmental restoration. In addition, a comprehensive summary of initiatives, implementation strategies, and eventually region-specific requirements for adopting different SWCM is missing. The present study therefore aims to review the different SWCM in Burkina Faso and implementation programs, as well as to provide information on their effects on environmental restoration and agricultural productivity. This was achieved by considering over 143 studies focusing on Burkina Faso’s experience and research progress in areas of SWCM and soil erosion. SWCM in Burkina Faso have largely resulted in an increase in agricultural productivity and improvement in food security. Finally, this study aims at supporting the country’s informed decision-making for extending already existing SWCM and for deriving further implementation strategies. For this purpose, temperature, precipitation and five additional climate indices for extremes and agriculture assessments (heavy precipitation; spring precipitation; growing season length (GSL), the Heat Wave Magnitude Index (HWMI); and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI)) from the reanalysis data were examined for their consistency to identify changes in the past (data since 1950). For future changes (up to the year 2100), the same parameters were extracted from an ensemble of 12 downscaled regional climate models (RCM) of the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX)-South Asia simulations for low and high emission scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 and 8.5). In the past, the climatic changes were mainly characterized by a mean temperature increase above global level of 1.8 °C from 1950 to 2010; uncertainty with regard to reanalyzed rainfall data limited a thorough analysis of past changes. Climate models projected the temperature trend to accelerate in the future, depending strongly on the global carbon emissions (2006–2050 Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5/8.5: 1.7/2.3 °C; 2006–2099: 2.7/6.4 °C, respectively). Despite the high uncertainty with regard to precipitation projections, it became apparent that the increasing evapotranspiration is likely to exacerbate Afghanistan’s already existing water stress, including a very strong increase of frequency and magnitude of heat waves. Overall, the results show that in addition to the already extensive deficiency in adaptation to current climate conditions, the situation will be aggravated in the future, particularly in regard to water management and agriculture. Thus, the results of this study underline the importance of adequate adaptation to climate change in Afghanistan. This is even truer taking into account that GSL is projected to increase substantially by around 20 days on average until 2050, which might open the opportunity for extended agricultural husbandry or even additional harvests when water resources are properly managed. N2 - Residues of german potash production are piled on large tailings near the mineral processing factories. The extend of those tailing piles as well as the necessary environmental protection measures are controlled by local mining authorities. Within the scope of permitting procedures for heap extensions and on behalf of the authority, the potash tailing piles of Hattorf and Wintershall site were examined by a large drilling program in order to learn more about flow processes inside the residues. Based on a former driling program at the hattorf site, a model of the heap´s interior was set up. By evaluating another drilling at the Wintershall site, this work contributes to the question whether that model conception can be applied to other potash heaps with similar composition as well. The evaluation was based on the displayed results of field examination (i.e. camera inspection, geophysical measurement) as well as laboratory examinations, including chemical and mineralogical analyses and examinations of physical and hydraulic properties. Furthermore, complementary structural examinations were carried out on samples from hattorf site. The results of those, in combination with the results from the Wintershall drilling programme, were used to describe flow and alteration processes inside the heap. The results have shown that there is no brine saturation inside the compacted residues allover the tailing pile, and therefore the principles of two-phase-flow have to be applied. So far, flow processes inside the tailings had been characterised by permeability coefficients, which are, in respect to the presented results, not applicable, because they describe saturated environments. Structural examinations have proved in agreement with other results that flow processes inside the tailing pile are bound to preferred flow paths, which can be described as a net of secondary porosity resulting from solution processes. According to the various results, those preferred paths lie next to aggregated areas, which are not affected by percolating brines. The influence of precipitation decreases with depth, and in conclusion, criteria for uninfluenced areas within the tailing pile were deduced. 3 The model conception, based on former results at Hattorf site, distinguishes between an outer mantle zone, where major flow processes take place, a low permeable core zone and a transition zone in between. According to the presented results, this work has proved, that the model conception is applicable for other kieserite-bearing tailing piles like Wintershall site; with the limitation, that the term of liquid permeability (or non-permeability) is not appropriate for the description of flow processes, as stated before. The results contributed to the model conception by providing further details according to the zone´s properties. In particular, it is shown, that the tailing pile´s mantle area contains a characteristic outer zone, which is – due to intense percolation of non-saturated brines – depleted of the remains of the resources kieserite and sylvine and their conversion products. This „halite-calcium sulphate zone“ is separated from the underlying reactive conversion zone by solution fronts of magnesium and potassium. Based on the so – extended model conception, the depth position of each zone for the area of the borehole at Wintershall site was derived, which provides the basis for technical measures of water catchment, as well as for the hydrologic balance. The focus of all research work in the frame of this dissertation was on the role of former surfaces of the tailing pile, which have been subsequently buried by further residues (so called „Schüttflächen“), and the contribution of such inhomogeneities to flow processes. The analyses have shown, that the role of those former surfaces depends mainly on the history of deposition. But even if the former surfaces still take part in flow processes and are not alterated due to compaction and chemical precipitation, their influence within the heap is limited to a small area, and so is their impact on the hydrologic balance. The model conception of potash tailing piles provides basic information for the assessment of the tailing pile´s environmental impact, especially on groundwater, as well as for the hydrologic balance and forecasts according to wastewater disposal. Furthermore, the results are relevant for the evaluation of protection and minimization measures as well as for the planning process of future measures of redevelopment of the mining sites. In this context, the work finally provides recommendations for future technical aspects of emission control measures and an environmentally sustainable tailings management. N2 - Soil moisture is an essential variable for the exchange of energy, moisture, and substances between the land surface and the atmosphere. Its effects on temperature and precipitation are diverse and complex. However, the schemes used in climate models to simulate soil moisture, also called soil hydrological schemes, are often very simplified due to the origin of climate models from weather models. In climate models, which compute simulations at coarse resolutions of tens or hundreds of kilometers of edge length, many processes can be neglected. However, the resolution of those models is steadily increasing and now generally has 0.22° in the recently published coordinated project of regional climate models called CORDEX-CORE. As a consequence, higher resolved data and more processes have to be simulated. This is even more true with respect to convection-permitting simulations having edge lengths of a few kilometers. With increasing model resolutions, the complexity and differentiation of questions to be answered by the use of climate models increases as well. This is also the case of the BigData@Geo-project, in which framework this thesis was written. The aim of this project is to provide high-resolution climate information for the Bavarian administrative district of Lower Franconia for stakeholders from agriculture, forestry, and viticulture. Due to these applied and basic requirements and objectives, there is also the need of model development for the regional climate model REMO (version 2015) used in this work. Thus, the main goal of this thesis is to replace the existing singlelayer soil hydrological scheme by a multilayer one. The advantage of multiple simulated soil layers is that the vertical movement of water, thus percolation and capillary rise, can now be simulated. This is done on the basis of soil hydrological parameters, those value is determined by the water retention curve as a function of soil texture and soil moisture. Various parameterizations have been developed for this curve, whereas the one of Clapp-Hornberger and van Genuchten were used herein. Additionally, the soil moisture can now be simulated to a depth of approximately 10 m or the bedrock's depth, respectively. Thus, in contrast to the previous scheme, which depth is limited to the rooting depth, there is the possibility that water is also available below the root zone. Hence, the absolute amount of water in the root zone is increased. Furthermore, the layering allows evaporation from bare soil based only on the water available in the uppermost layer. Another process, that can be reparameterized due to the layering and the data sets explained subsequently, is infiltration. To use the new scheme, information on soil hydrological parameters, rooting depth, and the depth to bedrock is required. For this purpose, appropriate data sets have to be prepared and implemented into the model. Regarding the rooting depth, three data sets with different depths, definitions, and resolutions were compared. Finally, the rooting depth from the vegetation module iMOVE, coupled with another REMO version, is used since a coupling between iMOVE and the multilayer soil scheme is planned in the future. With this, the rooting depths are consistent. In addition, the underlying resolution of the data is high and maximum rooting depths are considered, which are particularly important for simulating land surface-atmosphere interactions. These advantages were not provided by the other data sets. In the final model version, SoilGrids data are used for the depth to bedrock and grain size distributions. A comparison with other soil data sets was done in a parallel thesis (Ziegler 2022). For SoilGrids, it should be underlined that the grain size distributions enable the use of continuous pedotransfer functions instead of five discrete texture classes for the soil hydrological parameters. This leads to a much better differentiation of the heterogeneous soil. For this thesis, 19 simulations were calculated for Europe and an extended German region with resolutions of 0.44° and 0.11°, respectively, covering the period of 2000 to 2018. The implementation of the multilayer soil scheme leads to a decrease in root zone soil moisture compared to the singlelayer scheme. Nevertheless, the absolute amount of soil moisture increases by the consideration of soil below the root zone. Related to the individual layers, the soil moisture is thus underestimated, but in the process of model development an improvement can be achieved compared to ERA5. Furthermore, the new scheme results in a reduction of evapotranspiration that occurs across all model development steps and is especially present during summer. When compared to validation data from ERA5 and GLEAM, this is shown to be an improvement that occurs in space as well as bias and distribution. The same was found for surface runoff. Schemes implemented for this purpose (Philip, Geen-Ampt), which differ from the defaultly used Improved-Arno scheme by taking hydrlogical parameters into account, were able to show a further improvement in lowlands. In mountainous regions, however, the bias increased due to the not included consideration of slopes. Consequently, the final model version uses the Improved-Arno scheme. Temperature initially increases through the original version of the multilayer scheme, resulting in an overestimation instead of the previous underestimation by the singlelayer soil relative to E-OBS. Although the model development leads to a reduction in temperature, this reduction turns out to be too large, so that the temperature bias is ultimately higher than in the singlelayer model version. However, since evapotranspiration has been significantly improved, this error can possibly be attributed to a temperature overtuning. The analysis of heat events investigating the summers of 2003 and 2018 has shown that the model development leads to an improved simulation of these events compared to the singlelayer scheme. While this is not true for the spatial behavior of the mean temperature, there is a clear improvement of its temporal one. Additionally, the better simulation of daily extreme temperatures, especially its minimum, leads to an increase of the daily temperature range. This is usually underestimated too much by climate models. The consideration of vertical water fluxes has shown that there is still enormous potential for model development with regard to (soil) hydrological processes. This is especially true for future simulations with convection-permitting resolution. Thus, subgrid information of the soil and the orography should be considered. On the one hand, this serves to represent existing heterogeneities and, on the other hand, can contribute to the improvement of existing processes, as shown by the example of infiltration schemes. Since the simulated drainage increases due to the multilayer soil scheme to the same extent as the surface runoff decreases, the water is subsequently no longer available to the model. Therefore, groundwater should also be considered in the model. A number of studies have found an added value from integrating this variable and related processes. In the medium term, however, coupling to a hydrological model is generally recommended in order to be able to adequately represent the processes relevant in high-resolution simulations. ParFlow or mHM, for example, are suitable for this purpose. Overall, it can be noted that the multilayer soil scheme provides an added value because variables like evapotranspiration and surface runoff, that are difficult to simulate and subsequently to be bias adjusted in postprocessing, are modeled much better than using the singlelayer scheme. This is also true for extreme temperatures. Both improvements are caused by the soil layering and associated processes. Regarding the data, it can be seen that the rooting depth, the consideration of SoilGrids, and the vertical soil information is are responsible for the further optimization. In addition, the higher information content available by representing the layered soil moisture can also be classified as an added value. Their construction and destruction were often determined by the struggle for political and economic supremacy in the region and for control over the Spessart's natural resources. Wahlmich Castle is located in a relatively uncommon strategic and geomorphological position, characterized by a fairly remote position and atypical rough relief. In order to reconstruct the local relief development and possible human impact, a multi-method approach was applied combining two-dimensional geoelectrical measurements, geomorphological mapping and stratigraphic-sedimentological investigations. This provides new insights into the influence of landscape characteristics on choices of castle locations. The combined geoelectrical, geomorphological and stratigraphic-sedimentological data show that the rough relief is of natural origin and influenced by regional faulting, which triggered sliding and slumping as well as weathering and dissection of the surface deposits. The rough relief and the lithology permitted intensive land use and building activities. However, the location of the castle offered access to and possibly control over important medieval traffic routes and also represented certain ownership claims in the Aschaff River valley. The economic situation combined with rivalry between different elites led to the castle being built in a geomorphological challenging and strategically less valuable location. Focusing on castles located in rare and challenging geomorphological positions may therefore lead to a better understanding of castle siting in the future. Obliquely rotated principal component analysis applied to sea level pressure (SLP) was used to classify CTs in Africa, south of the equator. Three CTs were found to have a high probability of being associated with wet days in the Western Cape, and four CTs were equally found to have a high probability of being associated with dry days in the Western Cape. Generally, the dry/wet CTs feature the southward/northward track of the mid-latitude cyclone, adjacent to South Africa; anti-cyclonic/cyclonic relative vorticity, and poleward/equatorward track of westerlies, south of South Africa. One of the selected wet CTs was significantly related to variations of the SAM. Years with an above-average SAM index correlated with the below-average frequency of occurrences of the wet CT. The results suggest that through the dynamics of the CT, the SAM might control the rainfall variability of the Western Cape. Under the ssp585 scenario, the analyzed climate models indicated a possible decrease in the frequency of occurrence of the aforementioned wet CT associated with cyclonic activity in the mid-latitudes, and an increase in the frequency of the occurrence of CT associated with enhanced SLP at mid-latitudes. The potential turnover of frozen ground from a carbon sink to a carbon source, eroding coastlines, landslides, amplified surface deformation and endangerment of human infrastructure are some of the consequences connected with thawing permafrost. Satellite remote sensing is hereby a powerful tool to identify and monitor these features and processes on a spatially explicit, cheap, operational, long-term basis and up to circum-Arctic scale. By filtering after a selection of relevant keywords, a total of 325 articles from 30 international journals published during the last two decades were analyzed based on study location, spatio- temporal resolution of applied remote sensing data, platform, sensor combination and studied environmental focus for a comprehensive overview of past achievements, current efforts, together with future challenges and opportunities. The temporal development of publication frequency, utilized platforms/sensors and the addressed environmental topic is thereby highlighted. The total number of publications more than doubled since 2015. Distinct geographical study hot spots were revealed, while at the same time large portions of the continuous permafrost zone are still only sparsely covered by satellite remote sensing investigations. Moreover, studies related to Arctic greenhouse gas emissions in the context of permafrost degradation appear heavily underrepresented. New tools (e.g., Google Earth Engine (GEE)), methodologies (e.g., deep learning or data fusion etc.)and satellite data (e.g., the Methane Remote Sensing LiDAR Mission (Merlin) and the Sentinel-fleet)will thereby enable future studies to further investigate the distribution of permafrost, its thermal state and its implications on the environment such as thermokarst features and greenhouse gas emission rates on increasingly larger spatial and temporal scales. Like all models they suffer from errors, particularly systematic and location-specific representation errors. One way to reduce these errors is model output statistics (MOS) where the model output is fitted to observational data with machine learning. In this work, we assess the use of convolutional Deep Learning climate MOS approaches and present the ConvMOS architecture which is specifically designed based on the observation that there are systematic and location-specific errors in the precipitation estimates of climate models. We apply ConvMOS models to the simulated precipitation of the regional climate model REMO, showing that a combination of per-location model parameters for reducing location-specific errors and global model parameters for reducing systematic errors is indeed beneficial for MOS performance. We find that ConvMOS models can reduce errors considerably and perform significantly better than three commonly used MOS approaches and plain ResNet and U-Net models in most cases. Our results show that non-linear MOS models underestimate the number of extreme precipitation events, which we alleviate by training models specialized towards extreme precipitation events with the imbalanced regression method DenseLoss. While we consider climate MOS, we argue that aspects of ConvMOS may also be beneficial in other domains with geospatial data, such as air pollution modeling or weather forecasts.
