  • In 2005, a public discussion about the construction of a new building on the market square in Würzburg emerged. However, they could not prevail: in 2008, a new commercial building of VR-Bank, named “Forum”, was declared open. Controversial discussions about the reconstruction or conservation of monuments (in particular buildings of historical importance) are not uncommon in Germany. In this paper they are classified as "monument discourses". Especially when historically important places and objects are about to become subject to change, commonly referred to as being in a “tense situation”, monument discourses are particularly apparent. This paper explores the potential of a discourse linguistic study of monument discourses in regard to the example of the discourse about the “Petrini House” on the Würzburg market square. It employs research questions from the fields of art communication, spatial linguistics (placemaking processes), politolinguistics and contextualizes them in relation to linguistic identity creation and the linguistic handling of history. The study is based on a thematically researched text corpus comprising approximately 100,000 tokens of nine text types and three time periods, allowing the comparative analysis of several sub-corpora. Following the theoretical part, introducing the discourse of linguistic methods, the lexical structure of the corpus and the keywords of the discourse are analysed. Subsequently, a discourse-specific typology of metaphors based on of a reduced text corpus is created, dividing the content of the qualitatively collected metaphors into groups. Likewise, (reasoning) topoi on the basis of conclusion rules are analysed. Finally, the question to what extent the results can be generalized to monument discourses, is asked.show moreshow less
