These compounds often show pharmacological properties which are beneficial for the human health and/or can help to heal and prevent human diseases that are caused by pathogens. To profit from the favorable effects of the metabolites, it is essential to have a high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection, a smooth isolation procedure, and effective methods that lead to the unequivocal elucidation of the absolute stereostructure, which then can be synthetically modified in order to increase the pharmacological impact and/or the tolerance in the human body. Powerful tools to overcome these challenges are chromatographic instruments for the separation like HPLC and CZE, sensitive detection devices like UV and mass spectrometer, and specialized characterization methods like NMR- and CD spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations. By applying these – and further – analytical and chiroptical methods, the detection, isolation, and structural elucidation of naphthylisoquinoline alkaloids from two tropical Ancistrocladus lianas, the characterization of known and new polyketides from a Streptomyces strain, and the analysis of glucosinolates in the phloem of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana were achieved within this thesis. ...show moreshow less
