  • In this work the mechanisms of the increase of the strength in Aluminium nitride-ceramic were inves-tigated. Three approaches for the enhancement of the strength were made: dispersion strengthening and refinement of the microstructure, the development of compressive stresses in the surface region as a result of the phase transition of ZrN to ZrO2 and a modification of the sintering curve with the aim to achieve a homogeneous distribution of the secondary phase. The increase in strength with the aid of dispersion strengthening and microstructureIn this work the mechanisms of the increase of the strength in Aluminium nitride-ceramic were inves-tigated. The increase in strength with the aid of dispersion strengthening and microstructure refinement did not lead to the desired results. The particle size could be decreased by 30%, but no increase of the strength is observed. By thermal treatment of ZrN-containing AlN-ceramic at 600 °C the oxidation of ZrN was observed in the surface near regions. The transformation into ZrO2 led to an increase in volume. In this way, compressive stresses were generated near the surface, which lead to an increase in flexural strength by 28% in comparison to the standard AlN specimen. Within the AlN microstructure, certain regions containing a higher amount of the secondary phase, as well as regions, being free of the secondary phase could be observed. This segregation depends on the wetting of the AlN by the secondary phase during the sintering process. The wetting is de-scribed by the dihedral angle. With a dihedral angle above 60°, the sintering becomes instable and the segregation of the secondary phase occurs. For the first time the sintering process could be observed in situ. The sintering shrinkage was deter-mined by optical dilatometry, the thermal conductivity by the laser-flash-method. Based on these in-situ measurements, the wetting of AlN by the secondary phase could be explained. The dihedral angle declines with increasing temperature and rises during the hold time. By modification of the sintering curve, a microstructure with homogeneously dispersed secondary phase could be obtained. This led to an increase in strength of 29% in comparison to the standard AlN specimen.show moreshow less
