  • The present work investigates the sodium content of different compartments of the body by means of magnetic resonance imaging (= MRI). The correlation between increased salt consumption and arterial hypertension has already been extensively analyzed. For the understanding of pathophysiological states and their regulation, quantification of sodium concentrations in different tissue types is significant. Accurate measurement of sodium concentrations in human tissues is currently experimental. The correlation between increased salt consumption and arterial hypertension has already been extensively analyzed. For the understanding of pathophysiological states and their regulation, quantification of sodium concentrations in different tissue types is significant. Accurate measurement of sodium concentrations in human tissues is currently experimental. In the work presented here, sodium concentrations of skin and skeletal muscle were quantified using 23Na - magnetic resonance imaging (= 23 Na-MRI) in the human body. Sodium measurements were made in patients with primary hyperaldosteronism (= PHA), in patients with essential hypertension (= EH), and in a healthy control group. The results showed that skin and skeletal muscle are storage organs for sodium in the human body. Sodium concentrations in both storage organs could be modulated by targeted therapy.show moreshow less
