Due to their similar chemical composition to the inorganic phase of bone, calcium phosphates are widely used as bone replacement materials; they are osteoconductive and guide bone formation on the material surface. Despite the wide range of structures, only two major calcium phosphates are used as bone substitutes: hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phophate. This work describes chemistry and preparation of calcium orthophosphates and their use as bone replacement materials. The studies confined to dicalcium phosphate anhydride(DCPA), tetracalcium phosphate(TTCP), alpha-tricalcium phosphate and beta-tricalcium phosphate. The calcium phosphate cement(CPC) used in this study was formed by combining equimolar amounts of tetracalcium phosphate(TTCP) and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous(DCPA). Properties such as setting time or quality of the cements appeared to be influenced markedly by the regulation of particle size of the reactants,sintering- and grindind-parameter and by impurity of the powder.show moreshow less
