The polymer particles are made of polyacrylic acid salts, salts of sulfonated polystyrene-divinylbenzene-co-polymer or naphthalen-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt. The particles are not commercially available. The particles are combined with oil to ER fluids. For these ER fluids no data exists in the literature, so it was needed to characterise them. A rheometer system, which was built to measure ER fluids in an electrical field, was used for the characterisation. Together with a specially designed software, it was possible to set and control the rheometer system and the measurement, so that standardized measurement files could be obtained. The fluids were also characterised in a model actuator (plate actuator). For the tests with the plate actuator, a special force-measurement system with software was constructed and optimised. For the ER fluids particles with a diameter between 10 and 40µm are needed. The particles based on polyacrylic acid salts and naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt are produced by spray drying and gained from the solution of these polymers in water. The ER shear stress of fluids with poly-(sodiumacrylate) could be increased by increasing the water content and the concentration of the particles in the fluid. The current densities in the electrical field are very low and represent no problem for an array with an assembly of micro-actuators that are identical in construction. With an increased concentration of particles of naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt condensed by formaldehyde the fluid shows the expected result. The very high current density could be problematic for a technical application. In combination with an assembly of micro-actuators which are identical in construction, it requires enhanced precautions regarding the power source and the construction. The particles for the ER fluid based on salts of sulfonated styrene-copolymers are made via suspension polymerisation. The parameters of the polymerisation to get particles were systematically varied. They are the following: type of kation, method of sulfonating the particle, the degree of cross-linking and the chemical composition of monomers. Under the same conditions, the same method of sulfonating the particles, the degree of cross-linking and the chemical composition of monomers, the sodium salts have the best ER effect among the characterised ER fluids with particles of sulfonated styrene-copolymers sodium salts. The selection of the right method for the sulfonation of the particles can increase the ER effect, even if the other parameters and the particle size are not changed. The degree of cross-linking and the hardness of the polymer have an influence on the ER effect. With a suitable selection of these parameters it is possible to get a maximum of the ER effect. A further improvement of the ER effect can be attained by a variation of the chemical composition of the polymer like substitution of a part of styrene by trans-stilbene. In this case, an increase in the ER effect resulting from the rising of the particle concentration in the fluid can also be obtained. Considering the effect of the ER fluids in the plate actuator the extent of the ER effect in the shear modulus measured in the rheometer for electrorheology could be partly verified. So for the most parts the forces measured in the plate actuator are proportional to the size of the ER effect. Well suited for the use in the actuator system is the fluid with poly-(sodium acrylate) particles. This ER fluid shows a high time-stable ER shear stress and a low current density at the same time. The ER fluids based on sulfonated polystyrene polymers show also a time-stable ER shear stress, but their current density is too high for the application aimed at. The ER fluids based on naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt also have a very high current density and a lower ER effect. The use of these fluids is thus not advantageous. The fluids with particles are not stable in sedimentation because their densities vary. So the stabilisation of the fluid by an adjustment of the density is recommended before using it in the actuator and other applications. In the experiments the ER fluids reached forces up to 2.3 N (3 kV/mm DC) in the plate actuator. So these fluids may also have an effect in the miniaturised actuator system when the active surface of the electrodes, but not their geometry is reduced. The miniaturised actuator array based on the plate actuator. This array is to be used to show forces from an object. The forces distribution data are gained from an ultrasonic system. Further fields of applications being considered are for example aerospace, where information about dangerous forces which humans are exposed to are needed. Telemedicine, teleservices etc. are areas where this actuator array could also be helpful.show moreshow less
