  • The objective of this study was to evaluate possible correlations between nasality of the speech, configuration of the velopharyngeal closure, influence of adenoid tissues of the nasopharynx and cephalometric parameters in persons without known congenital disorders of the orofacial area. Therefore the results of Nasometer measures of 53 subjects were examined with statistic methods on correlations to measured variables from endoscopic evaluation of the velopharyx and the analysis of lateral cephalograms. In persons without congenital disordersThe objective of this study was to evaluate possible correlations between nasality of the speech, configuration of the velopharyngeal closure, influence of adenoid tissues of the nasopharynx and cephalometric parameters in persons without known congenital disorders of the orofacial area. Therefore the results of Nasometer measures of 53 subjects were examined with statistic methods on correlations to measured variables from endoscopic evaluation of the velopharyx and the analysis of lateral cephalograms. In persons without congenital disorders of the orofacial area and without present hyperrhinophonia skeletal parameters seem to have only little influence on the nasality of the speech. Also a marginal incomplete velopharyngeal closure, which is probably mostly caused by a disadvantageous form development of adenoidal structures, shows only marginal effects to the auditive evaluation of the speech quality. With otherwise favorable anatomical conditions also the meaning of compensatory structures like the circular velopharyngeal movement pattern or the occurrence of a Passavant’s ridge appears of subordinated importance.show moreshow less
