N2 - Biotechnology is expected to improve human life, to create new jobs and to increase economic growth. Because of the risks and the moral conflicts inherent in biotechnology and genetic engineering, critics demand to apply the new technology in a responsible and careful manner. Despite such demands, by now only few companies have introduced ethical standards into their daily management by using ethical management tools like, for example, codes of ethics or ethic-committees. This study describes and examines the corporate ethics specifically in the context of the biotechnology industry, taking into account the formal and informal institutions and the governance structure commonly found in this industry. For example, the role of corporations, entrepreneurs and employees in avoiding and solving moral conflicts is analysed. Furthermore, it is explained how corporations in the biotechnology industry can assume responsibility in, and may contribute to, solving and avoiding moral conflicts. Also, it is demonstrated how ethical issues can be implemented in the day-to-day business by using ethical management tools. Based thereon, the effectiveness and feasibility of such tools are evaluated. Finally, it is discussed for what actual reasons corporations in the biotechnology industry have been reluctant to use such tools in the past.
