  • The pre-linguistic development is characterized by an increasingly precise coordination of laryngeal and supralaryngeal activity and finally leads to the production of mature syllables that correspond to the segmental and temporal characteristics of adult language syllables (Oller 2000). The appearance of the first mature, mother-tongue syllables marks the beginning of the canonical-babbling-phase. Since the consonant repertoire and the syllable structures in canonical babbling vocalizations and first words seem to strongly coincide, the canonical-babbling-phase is accorded special significance for the early identification of disorders in productive language development (Oller et al. 1976, Locke 1983, Stoel-Gammon & Cooper 1984, Vihman et al. 1985, Vihman et al. 1986). For example, a certain predictive power is said to be the delayed entry into the canonical-babbling-phase after the tenth month of life (Oller et al. 1999). Striking structural (phonetic) characteristics of babbling-vocalizations could also carry an indicative valence (e. g. Stoel-Gammon 1989). Children with orofacial clefts (OFS) pass the prelinguistic development under special morphological conditions, which lead to massive restrictions in articulatory motor development. If one wants to draw conclusions about language acquisition-relevant abilities in these children on the basis of the analysis of canonical babbling vocalizations and thus identify potential risk children for language disorders, the masking effect of the articulation-motor restrictions represents a challenge. A possible solution could be the identification of characteristics of canonical babbling vocalizations of children with OFS that are largely cleft-independent. The present dissertation was dedicated to this goal. The pre-linguistic comfort vocalizations of 15 children with isolated or combined cleft palates were recorded before and after surgical closure of the palate at the age of 12 months and afterwards processed and quantitatively characterized using selected parameters. The comparison was based on pre-linguistic comfort vocalizations of a control group recorded according to age. A total of 6563 pre-linguistic comfort vocalizations were included in the analyses of the composition of the pre-linguistic vocalization repertoire. Of these, 2333 vocalizations could be identified as canonical or variegated babbling and used for further analyses. As a result of the analyses, the relative occurrence frequency of babbling vocalizations consisting exclusively of canonical syllables (pure sequences of syllables), the relative occurrence frequency of one, two, three and more syllable-sequences as well as the preferred syllable structure could be identified as relatively cleft-independent variables. In all other measured variables, large (diff >10%) and in some cases statistically significant group differences were observed and an influence of the malformation of the vocal tract was therefore assumed. Especially in studies that aim at correlations with and prognoses for further language development based on the analysis of pre-linguistic comfort vocalizations, the masking effect of the massive restrictions of articulation motor skills should be taken into account in the interpretation of the results.show moreshow less
