Die Transplantation ist die einzige effektive Therapie für irreversibel geschädigte Organe. Um jedoch das Transplantat vor der Zerstörung zu schützen, wird die Abwehrfunktion des Immunsystems gezielt geschwächt. Diese notwendige dauerhafte Schwächung mit so genannten Immunsuppressiva haben jedoch in ihrer Langzeitanwendung erhebliche Nebenwirkungen für die Patienten. Sie sind einer größeren Gefahr als die Normalbevölkerung ausgesetzt, an schwerwiegenden Infektionen und Tumore zu erkranken. Zwei antigenspezifische Strategien als Grundlage für zukünftige therapeutische Konzepte, die nicht die Immunabwehr behindern, werden unter dem Begriff "ideale Therapie" erläutert.
