The initial medical examination could be extended by a sport-specific performance test to detect relevant performance and functional deficits that increase the likelihood of injuries. In a prospective cohort study over five consecutive seasons, the roster of a professional basketball team underwent a modified NBA Combine test as part of the initial medical examination. The results obtained in the correlation analyses showed that athletes with deficits in agility and endurance tended to have an increased risk of injury. In addition, position-specific influences on the injury process could be determined. However, individual injuries seemed to largely elude the influence of the athletes. Overall, the implementation of a basketball-specific performance test as an extension of the medical aptitude test makes sense in order to identify functional deficits and reduce the risk of injury. In addition, the collected data in the rehabilitation after an injury can be used to determine the individual point of time for a return-to-play/-competition.…
