Additionally from May 2002 until September 2002 the screening was extended by two automatic analysis procedures. The Frankfurt algorithm is based on the recording of steady-state-brain-stem-potentials (SSP) at 40 decibel and statistical evaluation in combination with the BERAphon®. The new BERA however, is a statistical procedure using the “Zeitgang”-stimulus and the BERAphon®, which are based on the criteria of the visual evaluation. Additionally in this investigation 418 newborn children were examined with the “Zeitgang”-BERA and visual evaluation (reference) and with the SSP, as well as with the new BERA. The initial "PASS" rate of the reference was 94,40%, with the SSP it was 95,16% and with the New BERA it was 98,15%. After the first examination (Screeningstufe I) there was an increase of the "PASS" rate – the reference was 98,05%, with the SSP it was 99,60% and with the new BERA it was 100%. Both automatic evaluation methods refer in most cases to the results of the reference. The time of examination was decreased in relation to the reference time on approximately a quarter (SSP, 56.88 seconds ± 2.3 seconds (of SE)), and on a half (new BERA, 126.33 seconds ± 4.73 seconds (of SE)). The costs of the Newborn Hearing Screening could be reduced per child to 2,13 Euros (SSP) and 2,32 Euros (new BERA). It could be shown that both automated BERA-procedures decrease clearly the expenditure of device, personnel and time in relation to the reference procedure. Both automatic analysis procedures, the SSP and the new BERA, stand the test as a reliable and above all an economical method for the newborn hearing screening.show moreshow less
