For the first time the differentiation to F4/80(+) macrophages and its depletion via clodronate liposomes could be described. These adventitia derived macrophages were identified to be the main source of the local VEGF. The depletion resulted in a lack of paracrine operating VEGF, thus partly preserving the CD34(+) vasculogenic zone within the aortal adventitia.
