From the introduction: It is not always easy to define what a word means. We can choose between a variety of possibilities, from simply pointing at the correct object as we say its name to lengthy definitions in encyclopaedias, which can sometimes fill multiple pages. Although the former approach is pretty straightforward and is also very important for first language acquisition, it is obviously not a practical solution for defining the semantics of the whole lexicon. The latter approach is more widely accepted in this context, but it turns out that defining dictionary and encyclopaedia entries is not an easy task. In order to simplify the challenge of defining the meaning of words, it is of great advantage to organize the lexicon in a way that the structure in which the words are integrated gives us information about the meaning of the words by showing their relation to other words. These semantic relations are the focal point of this paper. In the first chapter, different ways to describe meaning will be discussed. It will become obvious why semantic relations are a very good instrument to organizing the lexicon. The second chapter deals with WordNet, an electronic lexical database which follows precisely this approach. We will examine the semantic relations which are used in WordNet and we will study the distinct characteristics of each of them. Furthermore, we will see which contribution is made by which relation to the organization of the lexicon. Finally, we will look at the downside of the fact that WordNet is a manually engineered network by examining the shortcomings of WordNet. In the third chapter, an alternative approach to linguistics is introduced. We will discuss the principles of corpus linguistics and, using the example of the British National Corpus, we will consider possibilities to extract semantic relations from language corpora which could help to overcome the deficiencies of the knowledge based approach. In the fourth chapter, I will describe a project the goal of which is to extend WordNet by findings from cognitive linguistics. Therefore, I will discuss the development process of a piece of software that has been programmed in the course of this thesis. Furthermore, the results from a small‐scale study using this software will be analysed and evaluated in order to check for the success of the project.
Bees are subject to permanent threat from predators such as ants. Their nests with large quantities of brood, pollen and honey represent lucrative targets for attacks whereas foragers have to face rivalry at food sources. This thesis focused on the role of stingless bees as third party interactor on ant-aphid-associations as well as on the predatory potential represented by ants and defense mechanisms against this threat. Regular observations of an aphid infested Podocarpus for approaching stingless bees yielded no results. Another aim of this thesis was the observation of foraging habits of four native and one introduced ant species for assessment of their predatory potential to stingless bees. All species turned out to be dietary balanced generalists with one mostly carnivorous species and four species predominantly collecting nectar roughly according to optimal foraging theory. Two of the species monitored, Rhytidoponera metallica and Iridomyrmex rufoniger were considered potential nest robbers. As the name implies, stingless bees lack the powerful weapon of their distant relatives; hence they specialized on other defense strategies. Resin is an important, multipurpose resource for stingless bees that is used as material for nest construction, antibiotic and for defensive means. For the latter purpose highly viscous resin is either directly used to stick down aggressors or its terpenic compounds are included in the bees cuticular surface. In a feeding choice experiment, three ant species were confronted with the choice between two native bee species - Tetragonula carbonaria and Austroplebeia australis - with different cuticular profiles and resin collection habits. Two of the ant species, especially the introduced Tetramorium bicarinatum did not show any preferences. The carnivorous R. metallica predominantly took the less resinous A. australis as prey. The reluctance towards T. carbonaria disappeared when the resinous compounds on its cuticle had been washed off with hexane. To test whether the repulsive reactions were related to the stickiness of the resinous surface or to chemical substances, hexane extracts of bees’ cuticles, propolis and three natural tree resins were prepared. In the following assay responses of ants towards extract treated surfaces were observed. Except for one of the resin extracts, all tested substances had repellent effects to the ants. Efficacy varied with the type of extract and species. Especially to the introduced T. bicarinatum the cuticular extract had no effect. GCMS-analyses showed that some of the resinous compounds were also found in the cuticular profile of T. carbonaria which featured reasonable analogies to the resin of Corymbia torelliana that is highly attractive for stingless bees. The results showed that repellent effects were only partially related to the sticky quality of resin but were rather caused by chemical substances, presumably sesqui- and diterpenes. Despite its efficacy this defense strategy only provides short time repellent effects sufficient for escape and warning of nest mates to initiate further preventive measures.
In this thesis it is shown how the spread of infectious diseases can be described via mathematical models that show the dynamic behavior of epidemics. Ordinary differential equations are used for the modeling process. SIR and SIRS models are distinguished, depending on whether a disease confers immunity to individuals after recovery or not. There are characteristic parameters for each disease like the infection rate or the recovery rate. These parameters indicate how aggressive a disease acts and how long it takes for an individual to recover, respectively. In general the parameters are time-varying and depend on population groups. For this reason, models with multiple subgroups are introduced, and switched systems are used to carry out time-variant parameters.
When investigating such models, the so called disease-free equilibrium is of interest, where no infectives appear within the population. The question is whether there are conditions, under which this equilibrium is stable. Necessary mathematical tools for the stability analysis are presented. The theory of ordinary differential equations, including Lyapunov stability theory, is fundamental. Moreover, convex and nonsmooth analysis, positive systems and differential inclusions are introduced. With these tools, sufficient conditions are given for the disease-free equilibrium of SIS, SIR and SIRS systems to be asymptotically stable.
Autonomous mobile robots operating in unknown terrain have to guide
their drive decisions through local perception. Local mapping and
traversability analysis is essential for safe rover operation and low level
locomotion. This thesis deals with the challenge of building a local,
robot centric map from ultra short baseline stereo imagery for height
and traversability estimation.
Several grid-based, incremental mapping algorithms are compared and
evaluated in a multi size, multi resolution framework. A new, covariance
based mapping update is introduced, which is capable of detecting sub-
cellsize obstacles and abstracts the terrain of one cell as a first order
surface.
The presented mapping setup is capable of producing reliable ter-
rain and traversability estimates under the conditions expected for the
Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Exploreration (CADRE)
mission.
Algorithmic- and software architecture design targets high reliability
and efficiency for meeting the tight constraints implied by CADRE’s
small on-board embedded CPU.
Extensive evaluations are conducted to find possible edge-case scenar-
ios in the operating envelope of the map and to confirm performance
parameters. The research in this thesis targets the CADRE mission, but
is applicable to any form of mobile robotics which require height- and
traversability mapping.
This thesis investigates the impact of the country-of-origin effect on Chinese luxury brands which intend to enter the German luxury goods market. By means of a questionnaire and a quantitative analysis, possible threats to Chinese newcomers that derive from an unfavorable country image are illustrated. In fact, the Chinese origin of luxury goods has an impact on German consumers' perception.
At Zwartbas, about 10 km west of Vioolsdrif, southern Namibia, the Dwyka succession is composed of tillites and distal fossiliferous dropstone-bearing glacio-marine shales. The completely exposed Dwyka succession is interbedded with thin bentonites, altered distal pyroclastic deposits, which were derived from the magmatic arc at the southern rim of Gondwana. Dropstone-bearing and dropstonefree sequences intercalate with four diamictites, of which the two lowest were certainly recognised as tillites. Four events of deglaciation were proven at Zwartbas and thus consist with correlative deposits in southern Africa. Numerous fossilised fishes, trace fossils, and plant fragments appear frequently within the lower half of the Dwyka succession whereas trace fossils were principally found in the complete succession. Although the environmental determination is quite problematic, the fossil assemblage rather implies proximal, shallow water conditions with temporary restricted oxygenation. The hinterland was covered with considerable vegetation, which points to a moderate climate. Water salinity determinations based on shale geochemistry rectify contrary palaeontological results and point to rather brackish or non-marine conditions in comparison to present-day salinites. Geochemical analyses of the bentonites relate the pyroclastic deposits with acid to intermediate source magmas, as they are known from the magmatic arc in present-day Patagonia. Tectono-magmatic comparisons furthermore emphasise a syn-collision or volcanic-arc situation of the magma source. However, significant cyclicity in the production of the pyroclastic deposits was not observed. Radiometric age determinations of two tuff beds clearly date the onset of glacial activity into the Late Carboniferous.
Compared to other countries, China was particularly early in developing a comprehensive set of policies to promote electric mobility (e-mobility). The aim of this study is to examine how China’s e-mobility development – through changes in formal institutions as well as market forces – has affected German passenger car manufacturers and their competitive environment and positions. The study is guided by two strands of research: new institutional economics and strategic management literature. A holistic multiple-case design is used to analyze five German case study firms. Qualitative interview data are collected through interviews and analyzed using a thematic analysis. The results show that the electric transformation in China has been shaped by changes in formal institutions at the macro, meso, and micro levels. Interestingly, the case study firms were affected not only by changes in China’s formal institutions but also by disparities between institutions in China and Europe. Furthermore, the data suggest that German car manufacturers are facing an increasingly competitive environment in China: at least four forces in Porter’s five-forces model seem to have intensified in recent years. The extent to which the case study firms have been affected by these developments may depend on the industry segments in which they are positioned. However, it can be argued that the electric transition has blurred the lines between traditional segments of the car industry to some extent. The interview data do not provide evidence that any of the German car brands have substantially changed their positioning, but they do suggest that some of the case study companies did not have an adequate offering for the Chinese market at the time of the interviews. In addition, the study finds that China’s transition to e-mobility has led to changes in various parts of the German automakers’ value chains, including production, sales, marketing, services, research and development, and procurement. Whether these changes will ultimately result in competitive advantage, parity, or disadvantage remains to be seen.
The internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the ribosomal gene repeat is an increasingly important phylogenetic marker whose RNA secondary structure is widely conserved across eukaryotic organisms. The ITS2 database aims to be a comprehensive resource on ITS2 sequence and secondary structure, based on direct thermodynamic as well as homology modelled RNA folds. Results: (a) A rebuild of the original ITS2 database generation scripts applied to a current NCBI dataset reveal more than 60,000 ITS2 structures. This more than doubles the contents of the original database and triples it when including partial structures. (b) The end-user interface was rewritten, extended and now features user-defined homology modelling. (c) Other possible RNA structure discovery methods (namely suboptimal and shape folding) prove helpful but are not able to replace homology modelling. (d) A use case of the ITS2 database in conjunction with other tools developed at the department gave insight into molecular phylogenetic analysis with ITS2.
