In this work, Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s musical sources will serve as a platform in an attempt to overcome the lack of explicit original guidance and guidelines of performance practice of early basso continuo. It will offer a methodology that will allow the unraveling of implicit theory and practice hidden in the music sources themselves. The methodology of this work is based on the fact that Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo (Rome, 1600) is printed using a unique continuo notation, which is detailed, precise, and coherent—more so than any other contemporaneous printed source. Through thorough investigation of this continuo notation, it will be possible to enrich our practical as well as theoretical knowledge of the early basso continuo. A wide range of evidences will emerge, covering a wide spectrum, from general questions of instrumentation up to the very notes that should be played. Using a special notation for illustration, I will demonstrate how Cavalieri’s basso continuo figuration, when combined with the known rules of counterpoint, is at times equivalent to written-out realizations.
As part of this study, different models of contrapuntal phenomena will be analyzed, mainly in the context of cadences but also in the context of other progressions that deserve to be recognized as formulas. Their theoretical structure will be uncovered as well as their actual application in music and their manner of execution. The prevalence of each phenomenon will be examined in order to distinguish common and recurrent phenomena from rarely-used formulas. In order to do this, and due to problematic historical terminology, it will be necessary to create a set of new terms inspired by Cavalieri’s notation. Those terms will not be solely relevant to Cavalieri’s music; the models were made flexible so that they may prove useful for future discussions or studies of early continuo in general.
Out of the known early basso continuo sources, a “mini-compendium” of practical implications will be extracted in order to exhaust the practical knowledge implicit in them. This endeavor will be concluded with a list of rules and general advice drawn from the sources, but it will also reveal some problematic aspects of these sources.
This endeavor will make it possible to compare the “new” implicit practical information deduced in this study with the explicit known continuo sources, and assess to what extant Cavalieri’s continuo practices illuminate and complement the known knowledge from previously-studied yet opaque sources of basso continuo.
The focus of this dissertation is on Cavalieri’s music, but the findings proposed here will be traced so as to illuminate the broader realm of the early Baroque and the 17th century musical style at large. Finally, this new research about Cavalieri’s music and continuo, along reevaluating of its place among the common continuo sources, calls for redistribution of source materials on the traditional “shelf” of early basso continuo sources.
While French Enlightenment seems philosophically dominated by a pejorative idea of the medieval past as the ‘Dark Ages’, this is only one conception among others. This article focuses on a different, a positive, representation of the Middle Ages in eighteenth-century literature, analyzing the chivalric novella Bliombéris (1784) by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian. On the one hand, the eponymous hero is considered a ‘noble savage’ who develops into an ideal knight by education and successful learning – two central ideas of the Enlightenment period. On the other hand, the study shows how the medieval topic of the Matière de Bretagne, exclusively required by English literature for a long time, is finally regained by the French and is reintegrated into their national memory.
In Enrique Gaspar y Rimbau’s 1887 science fiction novel El anacronópete, comedy presents itself in a variety of guises. One of the central comic elements of the book is the playful way in which the lower class characters, namely the maid Juana and the soldier Pendencia, engage with language. This article will compare Gaspar’s El anacronópete with two of its official translations, Leyla Rouhi’s The Anacronópete and Yolanda Molina-Gavilán and Andrea Bell’s The Time Ship: A Chrononautical Journey, in order to ascertain to what extent the Spanish author’s comic touch is preserved in the English translations of Juana’s and Pendencia’s speech. The maid’s and the soldier’s use of double meaning, the mondegreen, and code-switching will be the specific focus of our analysis. We will see that, as Salman Rushdie claims, although «[i]t is normally supposed that something always gets lost in translation […] something can also be gained» (1991: 17).
This article seeks to analyse the volume of poems Vapor de foto (2006) written by the young contemporary poet Luciana Romano from Buenos Aires. Romano is also an activist of the politically engaged artist collective Etcétera… founded in the late nineties. Her poetry reveals a certain correlation with the aesthetics of the actions and interventions developed by Etcétera… in the streets and public spaces not only of Argentina but also of Europe. Furthermore, the creation of Vapor de foto is based on the collective’s experiences and practices. Using a methodological approach that combines close reading and a cultural and socio-critical focus, several poems will be exemplarily analysed in order to examine the interrelation between Romano’s style of writing and her activism. Assuming that her poetry, as well as the work of Etcétera…, belongs to a postdictatorial contemporary aesthetics characterized by the complex interplay between dadaistic and surrealistic dis/continuities, this article will focus on the analysis of different forms of relations between text and image.
French-Madagascan colonial history is full of dark chapters. After Madagascar’s independence the French general public forgot the country very quickly. In Malagasies collective memory, the wounds of colonial injustice are still open even if they are generally considered as fady (‘tabooʼ). Désiré Razafinjato is the first Malagasy author writing in French who dares to approach the difficult relations between Malagasy-French and indigenous Malagasy as well as between indigenous Francophiles and indigenous anti-French nationalists. In his tale «Tahiry. From Madagascar to the Algerian djebel, the bitter-fatherland», the narrator speaks about the painful loss of any fatherland for all those Malagasy who during the War of Algeria got involved as French soldiers. Indeed, it is the sad history of the despoliation of an ideal Motherland on the French side and of the refusal of membership in an ancestral fatherland on the Malagasy side. What remains for those ancient French-Malagasy combatants is the feeling of a ‘bitter-fatherlandʼ and the feeling of living in ‘between everywhereʼ in some kind of ‘non-fatherlandʼ.

The present study is concerned with the production and perception of the stop consonant clusters /pt/ and /kt/ as well as CVC-Sequences /pVt/ and /kVt/ in European and Brazilian Portuguese (EP and BP, respectively). European and Brazilian Portuguese have the same syllable structure (Bisol 1999: 731, Mateus/d’Andrade 2000: 39), but are postlexically affected by contrary phenomena. After the occurence of phonological processes such as vowel reduction and deletion in European clusters and vowel epenthesis in Brazilian consonant clusters, the difference between lexical consonant clusters and CVC-sequences would be diminished in both varieties, so that EP would realize both as CC, while BP would realize both as CVC. In order to test whether clusters and CVC-sequences can be distinguished in production and perception, we discuss a physiological experiment and a perceptual study with participants of both varieties. The results show less overlap in BP than in EP. The reason for which is seen in the perception of intervocalic epenthetic elements even in lexical clusters in BP and more consonant clusters in EP.
In 2013, three hundred years had passed since the foundation of the Real Academia Española (RAE). The celebrations accompanying this anniversary were extended across the year and came to a closure with the publication of the 23rd edition of the Diccionario de la lengua española in 2014. Spanish media followed the above-mentioned festivities with a detailed coverage. The purpose of this article is to study the image of the RAE conveyed through the media and the Internet, which can be subsumed under the three terms ‘diverse, democratic and modern’. This form of representation is put into a broader context by considering the linguistic politics pursued by the RAE and the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (ASALE) under the keyword of panhispanism. Finally, a closer look is taken at El buen uso del español, a student manual published by the RAE and the ASALE in 2013, in relation to panhispanism and prescriptivism.
Die Tätigkeit des Singens ist für den Menschen von kultureller, anthropologischer, sozialer und ontogenetischer Bedeutung. Aktuelle Entwicklungen, die sich seit rund einem Jahrzehnt innerhalb der vokalpädagogischen Praxis mit Kindern im Bereich von Kindertagesstätten, von Grundschulen, Musikhochschulen und weiteren Ausbildungsinstitutionen vollziehen, zeigen, dass dem Singen mit Kindern ebenfalls eine große didaktische Relevanz zukommt.
Der Bedarf an vokalpädagogischen Angeboten nimmt stetig zu, doch war bislang ungeklärt, was gute vokalpädagogische Praxis angesichts höchst heterogener Angebote ausmacht. Daher wurde in der vorliegenden Dissertation zum einen der Frage nachgegangen, wie sich der Qualitätsbegriff für die vokalpädagogische Praxis bestimmen lässt. Zum anderen wurden Merkmale eruiert, welche gute vokalpädagogische Praxis charakterisieren.
Ausgehend von diesen Leitfragen wurde zunächst der Qualitätsbegriff für die vokalpädagogische Praxis mit Kindern auf theoretisch-systematische Weise bestimmt. Dabei konnten durch Anwendung und Übertragung empirisch belegter, fachunspezifischer Qualitätsmerkmale Ziele und leitende Prinzipien für die vokalpädagogische Praxis systematisch ermittelt werden, die den Besonderheiten musikalischen, vokalen und ästhetischen Lernens Rechnung tragen. Anschließend wurden diese Ziele und Prinzipien in einem mehrebenenanalytischen Modell zur Qualität in der vokalpädagogischen Praxis mit Kindern aufeinander bezogen; dabei wurden die Zielsetzungen zum Singen mit Kindern sowohl auf Prozessebene als auch auf Produktebene formuliert und begründet. Das Modell stellt das zentrale Ergebnis der Arbeit dar.
Schließlich wurden für die konkrete Anwendung und Nutzung in der vokalpädagogischen Praxis acht Merkmale guter vokalpädagogischer Praxis aus dem Modell expliziert, welche zugleich die wesentlichen Aspekte des vorgestellten Modells zusammenfassen. Zudem konnten auf Basis des Modells Maßnahmen für die Qualitätsentwicklung vokalpädagogischer Praxis entwickelt werden, was als weiteres praxisorientiertes Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit zu verstehen ist.
Eine Reihe mehrtägiger Suchexkur-sionen / Transekte in verschiedene Regionen Bayerns in den Jahren 2011 bis 2014 waren der Gattung Taraxacum gewidmet. Unter den gesammelten und beobachteten Arten ist Taraxacum broddesonii (sect. Ruderalia / Taraxacum) neu für Deutschland. Neu für Bayern sind Taraxacum fusciflorum, marklundii, spiculatum (sect. Hamata) und Taraxacum acroglossum, atroviride, clarum, floccosum, freticola, glossodon, hemicyclum, homoschistum, infuscatum, intumescens, lacinulatum, leucopodum, lundense, ottonis, pallidipes, praestabile, pseudoretroflexum, pulverulentum, saxonicum, sellandii, sundbergii, uncidentatum, uniforme, violaceinervosum (sect. Ruderalia / Taraxacum). Taraxacum lojoënse wird als ältester und korrekter Name für T. lippertianum und T. matricium und wahrscheinlich auch für T. ampelophytum und T. debrayi angesehen. Seltenere Arten sind abgebildet.
Das Rechtsinstitut der Culpa in contrahendo (Cic) wurde von der deutschen Rechtswissenschaft und Rechtsprechung entwickelt, um die vertraglichen Haftungsnormen einschl. der Schutzpflichten für Leib und Eigentum auf den vor-vertraglichen Bereich zu erstrecken. Diese Erstreckung ist für die genannten Schutzpflichten weder dogmatisch begründbar noch praktisch notwendig. Die funktionell für den Schutz des allgemeinen Erhaltungsinteresses zuständige Deliktsordnung reicht hier völlig aus. Der auf den vor-vertraglichen Bereich erstreckte Schutzbereich des Schuldvertrags ist durch dessen Funktion als rechtliches Instrument des Güter- und Leistungsaustauschs bestimmt und erfasst nicht das Interesse an der Integrität der gegenüber jedermann geschützten Rechtsgüter, insbes. an der Unversehrtheit von Person und Eigentum. Personen- und Sachschäden sind für das vor-vertragliche Verhandlungsschuldverhältnis ebenso wenig normrelevant wie für das Zielvertragsverhältnis. Der Schutzbereich des Cic-Schuldverhältnisses ist daher auf Verhalten zu beschränken, das Bezug zu dem konkret intendierten Leistungsverhältnis (Zielvertrag) aufweist.
The auditory system is an exquisitely complex sensory organ dependent upon the synchronization of numerous processes for proper function. The molecular characterization of hereditary hearing loss is complicated by extreme genetic heterogeneity, wherein hundreds of genes dispersed genome-wide play a central and irreplaceable role in normal hearing function. The present study explores this area on a genome-wide and single gene basis for the detection of genetic mutations playing critical roles in human hearing.
This work initiated with a high resolution SNP array study involving 109 individuals. A 6.9 Mb heterozygous deletion on chromosome 4q35.1q35.2 was identified in a syndromic patient that was in agreement with a chromosome 4q deletion syndrome diagnosis. A 99.9 kb heterozygous deletion of exons 58-64 in USH2A was identified in one patient. Two homozygous deletions and five heterozygous deletions in STRC (DFNB16) were also detected. The homozygous deletions alone were enough to resolve the hearing impairment in the two patients. A Sanger sequencing assay was developed to exclude a pseudogene with a high percentage sequence identity to STRC from the analysis, which further solved three of the six heterozygous deletion patients with the hemizygous, in silico predicted pathogenic mutations c.2726A>T (p.H909L), c.4918C>T (p.L1640F), and c.4402C>T (p.R1468X). A single patient who was copy neutral for STRC and without pathogenic copy number variations had compound heterozygous mutations [c. 2303_2313+1del12 (p.G768Vfs*77) and c.5125A>G (p.T1709A)] in STRC. It has been shown that STRC has been previously underestimated as a hearing loss gene. One additional patient is described who does not have pathogenic copy number variation but is the only affected member of his family having hearing loss with a paternally segregating translocation t(10;15)(q26.13;q21.1).
Twenty-four patients without chromosomal aberrations and the above described patient with an USH2A heterozygous deletion were subjected to a targeted hearing loss gene next generation sequencing panel consisting of either 80 or 129 hearing-relevant genes. The patient having the USH2A heterozygous deletion also disclosed a second mutation in this gene [c.2276G>T (p.C759F)]. This compound heterozygous mutation is the most likely cause of hearing loss in this patient. Nine mutations in genes conferring autosomal dominant hearing loss [ACTG1 (DFNA20/26); CCDC50 (DFNA44); EYA4 (DFNA10); GRHL2 (DFNA28); MYH14 (DFNA4A); MYO6 (DFNA22); TCF21 and twice in MYO1A (DFNA48)] and four genes causing autosomal recessive hearing loss were detected [GJB2 (DFNB1A); MYO7A (DFNB2); MYO15A (DFNB3), and USH2A]. Nine normal hearing controls were also included. Statistical significance was achieved comparing controls and patients that revealed an excess of mutations in the hearing loss patients compared to the control group. The family with the GRHL2 c.1258-1G>A mutation is only the second family published worldwide with a mutation described in this gene to date, supporting the initial claim of this gene causing DFNA28 hearing loss. Audiogram analysis of five affected family members uncovered the progressive nature of DFNA28 hearing impairment. Regression analysis predicted the annual threshold deterioration in each of the five family members with multiple audiograms available over a number of years.
Die Beschreibung von Ranunculus puberulus W. Koch erfolgte bereits 1933. Walo Koch bestimmte in der Folge eine Vielzahl von Belegen zum Teil deutlich verschiedener Taxa als R. puberulus. In Übereinstimmung mit den Arbeiten von Borchers-Kolb 1985 und Brodtbeck 1988 wird unter Hinzuziehung der publizierten Diagnose ein Lectotypus aus der Originalsammlung von Kummer & Koch von Hilzingen, Baden-Württemberg, ausgewählt und abgebildet. Anhand von rezenten Aufsammlungen an der Typuslokalität wird R. puberulus nach inzwischen standardisierten Kriterien charakterisiert und dargestellt. R. puberulus ist durch eine feine unregelmäßige Zähnung der Schlussblätter auffällig und stellt im Gegensatz zur weit verbreiteten Auffassung einen Endemiten des Hegau im südwestlichsten Deutschland dar. Insgesamt sind zur Zeit nur zwei Populationen bekannt, so dass für die Art zumindest eine starke Gefährdung anzunehmen ist.
This study explores novelty choice, a behavioral paradigm for the investigation of visual pattern recognition and learning of the fly Drosophila melanogaster in the flight simulator. Pattern recognition in novelty choice differs significantly from pattern recognition studied by heat conditioning, although both paradigms use the same test. Out of the four pattern parameters that the flies can learn in heat conditioning, novelty choice can be shown for height (horizontal bars differing in height), size and vertical compactness but not for oblique bars oriented at +/- 45°. Upright and inverted Ts [differing in their centers of gravity (CsOG) by 13°] that have been extensively used for heat conditioning experiments, do not elicit novelty choice. In contrast, horizontal bars differing in their CsOG by 13° do elicit novelty choice; so do the Ts after increasing their CsOG difference from 13° to 23°. This indicates that in the Ts the heights of the CsOG are not the only pattern parameters that matter for the novelty choice behavior. The novelty choice and heat conditioning paradigms are further differentiated using the gene rutabaga (rut) coding for a type 1 adenylyl cyclase. This protein had been shown to be involved in memory formation in the heat conditioning paradigm. Novelty choice is not affected by mutations in the rut gene. This is in line with the finding that dopamine, which in olfactory learning is known to regulate Rutabaga via the dopamine receptor Dumb in the mushroom bodies, is dispensable for novelty choice. It is concluded that in novelty choice the Rut cAMP pathway is not involved. Novelty choice requires short term working memory, as has been described in spatial orientation during locomotion. The protein S6KII that has been shown to be involved in visual orientation memory in walking flies is found here to be also required for novelty choice. As in heat conditioning the central complex plays a major role in novelty choice. The S6KII mutant phenotype for height can be rescued in some subsets of the ring neurons of the ellipsoid body. In addition the finding that the ellipsoid body mutants ebo678 and eboKS263 also show a mutant phenotype for height confirm the importance of ellipsoid body for height novelty choice. Interestingly some neurons in the F1 layer of the fan-shaped body are necessary for height novelty choice. Furthermore, different novelty choice phenotypes for different pattern parameters are found with and without mushroom bodies. Mushroom bodies are required in novelty choice for size but they are dispensable for height and vertical compactness. This special circuit requirement for the size parameter in novelty choice is found using various means of interference with mushroom body function during development or adulthood.
Die lokale Bioverfügbarkeit von osteoinduktiven Wachstumsfaktoren hat einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf das Ausmaß der Knochenbildung. Die Affinität der Proteine zu Komponenten der extrazellulären Matrix (EZM) beeinflusst ihre Ortsständigkeit und damit ihre biologische Aktivität am Implantationsort. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden BMP-2 und seine gentechnologisch hergestellten Varianten mit verstärkter (T3, T4) und aufgehobener (EHBMP-2) Bindung an die EZM untersucht. Die Wachstumsfaktoren wurden einzeln sowie in Kombination mit EHBMP-2 in Bezug auf die erzielbare Knochenneubildungsrate im heterotopen Implantatlager (Oberschenkelmuskulatur der Ratte) verglichen. Durch den Einsatz der Proteinkombinationen wurde der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit die Knochenneubildung durch die Mischung einer kaum an die extrazelluläre Matrix bindenden Varianten (EHBMP-2) mit einem „normal“ (BMP-2 Wildtyp) bzw. verstärkt (T3, T4) an die extrazelluläre Matrix bindenden Morphogen verbessert werden kann. Mittels röntgenologischer, biochemischer und histologischer Untersuchungen wurden die Geschwindigkeit und das Ausmaß der Knochenneubildung analysiert. Bei allen Proteinen bzw. Proteinkombinationen wurde eine direkte Abhängigkeit der Knochenneubildung von den eingesetzten Proteinmengen beobachtet. Bei niedriger Konzentration (2 µg) waren BMP-2 bzw. die Varianten T3 und T4 den Proteinkombinationen mit EHBMP-2 immer überlegen. Bei höherer Dosis (4 µg) waren BMP-2 und T4 den Kombinationen mit EHBMP-2 überlegen. Nur bei T3 in höherer Dosierung konnte ein positiver Effekt einer Kombination mit EHBMP-2 beobachtet werden.
