A lot of countries have recently published updated hydrogen strategies, often including more ambitious targets for hydrogen production. In parallel, accompanying ramp-up mechanisms are increasingly coming into focus with the first ones already being released. However, these proposals usually translate mechanisms from renewable energy (RE) policy without considering the specific uncertainties, spillovers, and externalities of integrating hydrogen electrolysis into electricity grids. This article details how different aspects of a policy can address the specific issues, namely funding, risk-mitigation, and the complex relation with electricity markets. It shows that, compared to RE policy, subsidies need to emphasize the input side more strongly as price risks and intermittency from electricity markets are more prominent than from hydrogen markets. Also, it proposes a targeted mechanism to capture the positive externality of mitigating excess electricity in the grid while keeping investment security high. Economic policy should consider such approaches before massively scaling support and avoid the design shortcomings experienced with early RE policy.
Does Gender Matter for the Entrepreneurship Fairy Tale? An Analysis of Chinese Unicorn Start-ups
(2021)
Start-up ecosystems around the world have created a large number of successful and innovative unicorn companies in recent years. Our research note focuses on the case of China and offers a global comparative perspective on the current status of Chinese unicorn start-ups and their founding structure. We identify a predominantly male unicorn founding structure and illustrate a worrying decline of female entrepreneurship in China.
Data as the new driver for growth? European and Chinese perspectives on the new factor of production
(2021)
Amidst an emerging international systemic competition between China and the Western world, China’s sustained high economic growth rates, technological innovations and successful control of the corona pandemic have raised doubts over the West’s systemic capabilities. In this context, data resources and regimes play an increasing role.
This research note looks at data as present and future driver of innovation and economic growth in more detail. It compares the Chinese and the European perspective on data as well as their respective (planned) policy measures in order to draw tentative conclusions about their different approaches' implications.
In our globalized world, companies operate on an international market. To concentrate on their main competencies and be more competitive, they integrate into supply chain networks. However, these potentials also bear many risks. The emergence of an international market also creates pressure from competitors, forcing companies to collaborate with new and unknown companies in dynamic supply chain networks. In many cases, this can cause a lack of trust as the application of illegal practices and the breaking of agreements through complex and nontransparent supply chain networks pose a threat.
Blockchain technology provides a transparent, decentralized, and distributed means of chaining data storage and thus enables trust in its tamper-proof storage, even if there is no trust in the cooperation partners. The use of the blockchain also provides the opportunity to digitize, automate, and monitor processes within supply chain networks in real time.
The research project "Plattform für das integrierte Management von Kollaborationen in Wertschöpfungsnetzwerken" (PIMKoWe) addresses this issue. The aim of this report is to define requirements for such a collaboration platform. We define requirements based on a literature review and expert interviews, which allow for an objective consideration of scientific and practical aspects. An additional survey validates and further classifies these requirements as “essential”, “optional”, or “irrelevant”. In total, we have derived a collection of 45 requirements from different dimensions for the collaboration platform.
Employing these requirements, we illustrate a conceptual architecture of the platform as well as introduce a realistic application scenario. The presentation of the platform concept and the application scenario can provide the foundation for implementing and introducing a blockchain-based collaboration platform into existing supply chain networks in context of the research project PIMKoWe.
The impact of sustainable supply chain management practices on performance metrics – A meta-analysis
(2017)
In this paper the relationship between corporate sustainability performance and corporate financial performance is researched. It is hypothesized that a better sustainability performance of firms leads to financial success in terms of increased EBIT and Market Capitalization. Furthermore 17 environmental activities and their assumed impact on financial benefits are analyzed for ten different industry sectors. The data sample for this research paper has been taken from Thomson Reuters Database ASSET4 and includes 3115 firms. The results show that there is a positive and non-linear link between the sustainability performance and the financial performance of firms, intending that financially more successful firms can gain greater benefits from being sustainable than less successful firms do. Furthermore sustainable environmental activities have been identified for different industry sectors, which indicate to lead to an increase of the financial performance.
