During deployment, soldiers face situations in which they are not only exposed to violence but also have to perpetrate it themselves. This study investigates the role of soldiers' levels of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and appetitive aggression, that is, a lust for violence, for their engaging in violence during deployment. Furthermore, factors during deployment influencing the level of PTSD symptoms and appetitive aggression after deployment were examined for a better comprehension of the maintenance of violence. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 468 Burundian soldiers before and after a 1‐year deployment to Somalia. To predict violent acts during deployment (perideployment) as well as appetitive aggression and PTSD symptom severity after deployment (postdeployment), structural equation modeling was utilized. Results showed that the number of violent acts perideployment was predicted by the level of appetitive aggression and by the severity of PTSD hyperarousal symptoms predeployment. In addition to its association with the predeployment level, appetitive aggression postdeployment was predicted by violent acts and trauma exposure perideployment as well as positively associated with unit support. PTSD symptom severity postdeployment was predicted by the severity of PTSD avoidance symptoms predeployment and trauma exposure perideployment, and negatively associated with unit support. This prospective study reveals the importance of appetitive aggression and PTSD hyperarousal symptoms for the engagement in violent acts during deployment, while simultaneously demonstrating how these phenomena may develop in mutually reinforcing cycles in a war setting.
Affordable prices for 3D laser range finders and mature software solutions for registering multiple point clouds in a common coordinate system paved the way for new areas of application for 3D point clouds. Nowadays we see 3D laser scanners being used not only by digital surveying experts but also by law enforcement officials, construction workers or archaeologists. Whether the purpose is digitizing factory production lines, preserving historic sites as digital heritage or recording environments for gaming or virtual reality applications -- it is hard to imagine a scenario in which the final point cloud must also contain the points of "moving" objects like factory workers, pedestrians, cars or flocks of birds. For most post-processing tasks, moving objects are undesirable not least because moving objects will appear in scans multiple times or are distorted due to their motion relative to the scanner rotation.
The main contributions of this work are two postprocessing steps for already registered 3D point clouds. The first method is a new change detection approach based on a voxel grid which allows partitioning the input points into static and dynamic points using explicit change detection and subsequently remove the latter for a "cleaned" point cloud. The second method uses this cleaned point cloud as input for detecting collisions between points of the environment point cloud and a point cloud of a model that is moved through the scene.
Our approach on explicit change detection is compared to the state of the art using multiple datasets including the popular KITTI dataset. We show how our solution achieves similar or better F1-scores than an existing solution while at the same time being faster.
To detect collisions we do not produce a mesh but approximate the raw point cloud data by spheres or cylindrical volumes. We show how our data structures allow efficient nearest neighbor queries that make our CPU-only approach comparable to a massively-parallel algorithm running on a GPU. The utilized algorithms and data structures are discussed in detail. All our software is freely available for download under the terms of the GNU General Public license. Most of the datasets used in this thesis are freely available as well. We provide shell scripts that allow one to directly reproduce the quantitative results shown in this thesis for easy verification of our findings.
This article exemplifies Gunter Grimm’s concept of productive reception by analyzing César Fernández García’s young adult novel La última bruja de Trasmoz (2009) and the episode Tiempo de hechizos (2017) of the TV series El ministerio del tiempo as two modern works which artistically and creatively deal with Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer’s Cartas desde mi celda (1864). The study is based on the core assumption that the choice of genre greatly influences the treatment of motives such as the perception of nature and the idea of dreams, as well as the image of the witch. While Bécquer’s letters, which focus on the rural people’s superstition, present the witch of Aragonese folklore, the modern examples portray two of her fantastic counterparts: the novel depicts its magical protagonist as an evil supernatural being, whereas the TV episode of the science fiction series shows the witch as a time traveller and a victim.

To deal with drawbacks of paper-based data collection procedures, the QuestionSys approach empowers researchers with none or little programming knowledge to flexibly configure mobile data collection applications on demand. The mobile application approach of QuestionSys mainly pursues the goal to mitigate existing drawbacks of paper-based collection procedures in mHealth scenarios. Importantly, researchers shall be enabled to gather data in an efficient way. To evaluate the applicability of QuestionSys, several studies have been carried out to measure the efforts when using the framework in practice. In this work, the results of a study that investigated psychological insights on the required mental effort to configure the mobile applications are presented. Specifically, the mental effort for creating data collection instruments is validated in a study with N=80 participants across two sessions. Thereby, participants were categorized into novices and experts based on prior knowledge on process modeling, which is a fundamental pillar of the developed approach. Each participant modeled 10 instruments during the course of the study, while concurrently several performance measures are assessed (e.g., time needed or errors). The results of these measures are then compared to the self-reported mental effort with respect to the tasks that had to be modeled. On one hand, the obtained results reveal a strong correlation between mental effort and performance measures. On the other, the self-reported mental effort decreased significantly over the course of the study, and therefore had a positive impact on measured performance metrics. Altogether, this study indicates that novices with no prior knowledge gain enough experience over the short amount of time to successfully model data collection instruments on their own. Therefore, QuestionSys is a helpful instrument to properly deal with large-scale data collection scenarios like clinical trials.

Katholische Kirche zwischen Ost und West - Das Bischöfliche Kommissariat Meiningen von 1949 bis 1961
(2023)
Background
Combination therapies of anorectic gut hormones partially mimic the beneficial effects of bariatric surgery. Thus far, the effects of a combined chronic systemic administration of Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide tyrosine tyrosine 3-36 (PYY\(_{3-36}\)) have not been directly compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in a standardized experimental setting.
Methods
High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese male Wistar rats were randomized into six treatment groups: (1) RYGB, (2) sham-operation (shams), (3) liraglutide, (4) PYY\(_{3-36}\), (5) PYY\(_{3-36}\)+liraglutide (6), saline. Animals were kept on a free choice high- and low-fat diet. Food intake, preference, and body weight were measured daily for 4 weeks. Open field (OP) and elevated plus maze (EPM) tests were performed.
Results
RYGB reduced food intake and achieved sustained weight loss. Combined PYY\(_{3-36}\)+liraglutide treatment led to similar and plateaued weight loss compared to RYGB. Combined PYY\(_{3-36}\)+liraglutide treatment was superior to PYY\(_{3-36}\) (p ≤ 0.0001) and liraglutide (p ≤ 0.05 or p ≤ 0.01) mono-therapy. PYY\(_{3-36}\)+liraglutide treatment and RYGB also reduced overall food intake and (less pronounced) high-fat preference compared to controls. The animals showed no signs of abnormal behavior in OF or EPM.
Conclusions
Liraglutide and PYY\(_{3-36}\) combination therapy vastly mimics reduced food intake, food choice and weight reducing benefits of RYGB.
This article focuses on the mediality of the Donaueschinger passion play, oscillating between textuality and performativity, rituality and theatrality. It argues that the play is composed as a reading text, regarding the speech, style and the narrative, poetological and exegetical character of its stage directions. In spite of its being intended to be read the passion play exhibits theatralic and liturgical elements, that allow to identify its literary genre. The detailed description of décor and actions on stage and even of the audience helps to imagine a performance, that exceeds the textual status of the manuscript. The text's performative dimension invites the reader to participate in contemplating Christ's passion and in worshiping him.
The control of energy homeostasis is of pivotal importance for all living organisms. In the last years emerged the idea that many stress responses that are apparently unrelated, are actually united by a common increase of the cellular energy demand. Therefore, the so called energy signaling is activated by many kind of stresses and is responsible for the activation of the general stress response. In Arabidopsis thaliana the protein family SnF1- related protein kinases (SnRK1) is involved in the regulation of many physiological processes but is more known for its involvement in the regulation of the energy homeostasis in response to various stresses. To the SnRK1 protein family belong SnRK1.1 (also known as KIN10), SnRK1.2 (KIN11), and SnRK1.3 (KIN12). SnRK1 exerts its function regulating directly the activity of metabolic enzymes or those of key transcription factors (TFs). The only TFs regulated by SnRK1 identified so far is the basic leucine zipper (bZIP) 63. bZIP63 belongs to the C group of bZIPs (C-bZIPs) protein family together with bZIP9, bZIP10, and bZIP25. SnRK1.1 phosphorylates bZIP63 on three amino acids residues, serine (S) 29, S294, and S300. The phosphorylation of tbZIP63 is strongly related to the energy status of the plant, shifting from almost absent during the normal growth to strongly phosphorylated when the plant is exposed to extended dark. bZIPs normally bind the DNA as dimer in order to regulate the expression of their target genes. C-bZIPs preferentially form dimers with S1-bZIPs, constituting the so called C/S1- bZIPs network. The SnRk1 dependent phosphorylation of bZIP63 regulates its activation potential and its dimerization properties. In particular bZIP63 shift its dimerization preferences according to its phosphorylation status. The non-phosphorylated form of bZIP63 dimerize bZIP1, the phosphorylates ones, instead, forms dimer with bZIP1, bZIP11, and bZIP63 its self. Together with bZIP63, S1-bZIPs are important mediator of part of the huge transcriptional reprogramming induced by SnRK1 in response to extended dark. S1-bZIPs regulate, indeed, the expression of 4'000 of the 10'000 SnRK1-regulated genes in response to energy deprivation. In particular S1-bZIPs are very important for the regulation of many genes encoding for enzymes involved in the amino acid metabolism and for their use as alternative energy source. After the exposition for some hours to extended dark, indeed, the plant make use of every energy substrate and amino acids are considered an important energy source together with lipids and proteins. Interestingly, S1- bZIPs regulate the expression of ETFQO. ETFQO is a unique protein that convoglia the electrons provenienti from the branch chain amino acids catabolism into the mitochondrial electron transport chain. The dimer formed between bZIP63 and bZIP2 recruits SnRK1.1 directly on the chromatin of ETFQO promoter. The recruitment of SnRK1 on ETFQO promoter is associated with its acetylation on the lysine 14 of the histone protein 3 (K14H3). This chromatin modification is normally asociated with an euchromatic status of the DNA and therefore with its transcriptional activation. Beside the particular case of the regulation of ETFQO gene, S1-bZIPs are involved in the regulation of many other genes activated in response of different stresses. bZIP1 is for example an important mediator of the salt stress response. In particular bZIP1 regulates the primary C- and N-metabolism. The expression of bZIP1, in response of both salt ans energy stress seems to be regulated by SnRK1, as it is the expression of bZIP53 and bZIP63.
Beside its involvement in the regulation of the energy stress response and salt response, SnRK1 is the primary activators of the lipids metabolism during see germination. SnRK1, indeed, controls the expression of CALEOSINs and OLEOSINs. Those proteins are very important for lipids remobilization from oil droplets. Without their expression seed germination and subsequent establishment do not take place because of the absence of fuel to sustain these highly energy costly processes, which entirely depend on the catabolism of seed storages.
